Premise

An elderly couple in Japan finds a golden apple in their garden. Eating it miraculously makes them young again. Yes, grandpa and grandma are young again.

Jel’s verdict: Let’s get you back to bed, grandpa

I’ve watched a lot of anime comedies based on a single joke and I’m hard pressed to think of one that runs of steam faster than this. I get it, grandpa and grandma are now young and hot and everyone is horny for them. This apparently includes their granddaughter, since half the jokes this episode are about her wanting to date her grandpa now. I think this is supposed to be an in-universe joke, but they play that card too many times to be comfortable.

That said, I don’t want anyone to think this is some kind of weird, pervy take on this concept. Everything that happens is good clean fun, it just seems the jokes all have some kind of romantic implication. The big centerpiece of episode 1 involves setting up a rivalry with another old widower who used to be in love with Grandma seventy years ago. Even their granddaughter’s b-plot is about having a crush on said rival’s grandson. Very little is done to explore the fact that these are people with the maturity and experience of someone well into their 80’s, now given a 20 year old body. It’s just “yeah, they’re hot now”. The end result is pretty dull, and unfortunately I think this is another comedy wasting a potentially fun idea.
