The GLORIO Decade: The 2010s in Anime Music

Music is as integral to a piece of media as visuals or plot, which is why for as long as The GLORIO Blog has existed, we have done some variety of a feature about our favourite anime songs. With the decade having come to a close, we’re presenting the most memorable tracks of them all right here, with all the pithy commentary from yours truly you’ve come to expect.

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Summer 2018

Is anime music — shudder to think — becoming mainstream? Just the other day, I was browsing through a CD store and found an EP by some symphonic metal band covering Attack on Titan songs, just like that, out in the open. Should something like that even be allowed? By the way, did you know…

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Spring 2018

Remember when this post came out around the midway point of the season? Well, it sure is the midway point for me, because I am behind on everything! In any case, those of us who do actually watch anime have informed me that this season has been a bit of a dud in the music…

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Winter 2018

This season, eight cute shows entered the ring in a fight to the death. One will reign victorious, but not in this feature, as our overview of the best theme songs of the season has no love for any of the combatants in The Roundup‘s cute show battle royale extravaganza. What do we have, then?…

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Fall 2017

Behold, the field in which we grow our blogs! Lay thine eyes upon it and thou shalt see that it is barren! In the chaotic race towards the final days of this godforsaken year and the 12 Days of Glorio we’ll celebrate to see it off, we’d almost forgotten all about our seasonal look back…

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Summer 2017

Bad news! Summer is over! Good news! That means we’ll be telling you about our favourite anime songs of the season again! Scant consolation, probably, but hey, since when is that our job? Regardless, we have another diverse lineup for you, with gratuitous sex jazz, spy prog, minimal hip-house and a dash of fairy pop. All of these are totally real genres. Look them up.

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Spring 2017

We’re somewhere vaguely halfway into the Spring season again, so here we are again to tell you which opening sequences and ending themes we didn’t skip after the first episode this time around! This time around, hamburgers, holiday pictures and HEAVY METAL.

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Winter 2017

We’re past the halfway point of this season already, which means it’s once again time to pick our favourite anime song of the season. With JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure absent from the lineup for the first time in what seems to be forever, the path is clear for a larger variety of songs to be featured, most of which from shows probably no one’s even watching.

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Fall 2016

With the season far from more than halfway over, it’s time to once again take a look (and listen) at our favourite songs from shows that have been airing for the past few months. The lineup of bloggers recommending their pick may have shrunk a bit, compared to the past couple of times we did this, but on the other hand, This will be the first OP/ED Op-Eds in ages that won’t ask you to listen to the same song twice. Hey, I guess this season was just that good? Not much of a consolation, but eh, we’ll take what we can get. Anyway, this time around, I namedrop a bunch of artists you should ask your dad about, Artemis gets another reason to fawn over Yuri!! on Ice and Jel is most likely on drugs. Again.

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Summer 2016

With the season more than halfway over, it’s time to once again dig into our favorite songs from shows that have been airing for the past few months. Said lineup includes an anime by Yuzuru Tachikawa, the new prodigy of opening sequences, so expect the Mob Psycho 100 to show up a lot on this list. Otherwise, there are still cooking classes, fighting dreamers, and the smoldering depths of hell. Don’t bother counting to 99, and dive right in!

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Spring 2016

With the season more than halfway over, it’s time to once again dig into our favorite songs from shows that have been airing for the past few months. While our Winter 2016 slate was impressively diverse, it seems the crew have pretty much converged on the best songs en masse this time round. Still, since it’s been a really good season for OPs and EDs that’s not exactly a problem.

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Winter 2016

I saw snow when I looked out of my bedroom window this morning, so winter feels far from over. Nevertheless, we’re well past halfway into the Winter anime season, which means it’s time for us to select our favourite anime songs of the current season. Better check them out before they get thrown off YouTube, because with the a lack of a clear victor, this season’s lineup is a diverse haul of new talents and old friends ready to boost you all the way back to 2004. Or 1986. Or 1928. Seriously, are Asian Kung-Fu Generation still a thing?

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Summer 2015

Bad news: Summer is over. Worse news: Summer season is not yet over. As you might have been able to tell from the dearth of content, the current anime load-out hasn’t really managed to swipe us off our feet. A more satisfactory review awaits you in a few weeks, but now that we’re halfway through the season already, the members of our merry crew have had more than enough time to pick their favourite anime song of the season. That is, if they even watched anything at all this season.

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Spring 2015

‘Tis finally the season for annoying summer hits, so let’s all stay inside and reflect on the good old days before the calypso beats took over. Only it’s not the early 2000’s anymore and this is an anime blog, so the music isn’t going to be that much better. Especially since this season has been positively gasping for decent shows and decent songs to go with them, so don’t be surprised if you’re going to get a bit of déjà vu from this here feature. For what they’re worth, these are our favourite anime songs from the past season.

OP/ED Op-Eds: The Best of Fall 2014

We’re back a bit earlier this season with that feature where I can pretend to write for Pitchfork again, and in grand music industry tradition, we’ll start picking the best song of the season already when the season’s still going on, just to get it out of the way before the yearly wrap-up content.
