Jel’s verdict: Cancel the Tour

With this kind of show, there’s a danger of either being too slow and boring or doing too much and ruining the atmosphere. I think this first episode falls in the latter category. First, we get WAY too many direct glimpses into the pre-apocalypse days, either via direct flashback or the dreams/memories/visions one of the girls keeps having. She has inherited a smart phone (that still works somehow) and a motorbike from some lady who was either literally her sister or someone she shares some kind of spiritual connection with, and they keep using this to show scenes from the past. I’m not really sure why this is necessary? Is it to show what we lost? I feel like there are much less intrusive ways to do that.

Then we get to the weird robot stuff. Spoilers: the other girl is some kind of robot or cyborg or something. I don’t know why it’s always the emotionless little girls with silver hair, but it is what it is. There’s a scene where they encounter some kind of AI driven tank and she has to blast it with her arm cannon, and like the flashbacks this also doesn’t seem to contribute anything meaningful. Sure, I am down for adding some sci-fi, but what is this accomplishing?

If there is one thing I liked, I guess the background art is nice? This is a “green” post-apocalypse where nature is healing and the ruins of civilization are overrun with plants and animals. It makes for some very pretty shots, it’s just too bad the atmosphere is ruined by everything else. I normally like this type of show and really wanted to give this a chance, but I don’t think it’s going to work out for me.
