Hazuki is really awkward around people but finds comfort in reading books. A mysterious book appears in her bag one day that leads her to a magic academy in an alternate world.
Jel’s verdict: Shut It Down
It’s never a good sign when your show has to recycle animation clips in the first episode… and in the OP. Yes, not only did the OP have clips from the episode, it had to loop a few of them within a minute and a half. Needless to say, the technical quality of Maerchen Maedchen was kind of embarrassing and probably the most notable thing about the episode.
I’m always willing to overlook those things if the content is good but sadly that was not the case. This is the best way I can describe the plot: imagine an alternate world magic academy light novel setup, except they cut to the point and get rid of the blank slate male protagonist. Instead, you can just leer at the harem of generic anime girls yourself, cutting out the middle man. I suppose there is a main character, but she is basically quiet, submissive, baby-faced waifu bait that ends up being naked for half the episode.
Add that all up and Maerchen Maedchen is the worst thing I’ve watched in what has otherwise been a pretty solid season. It’s trash, and not even well made trash if that’s what you’re looking for. Nothing to see here, move along.
