Re: Ya Boy Kongming, I think it’s not really that it was a “good fit” PA Works, but more like, PA Works just molded it to fit their usual MO. I haven’t read much of the manga, but I distinctly remember it being a wacky comedy, so when I watched the first couple of episodes of the show I was so surprised to see it… well, not being that. So my guess is, unless the manga turns more serious later on, PA Works just kind of did a Rurouni Kenshin OVA with it, wherein they take the source material and just basically go “OKAY, BUT LISTEN TO *MY* SONG” with it. Just maybe not as hardcore as the RK OVA guys did. (They also did that with Shoukoku no Altair, that was deeply disappointing as well…)
As for Tiger & Bunny 2, yeeeah… Honestly, I think the problem is that it’s trying to have their cake and eat it too, eg. not taking itself too seriously, but then also wanting to have serious drama, and they just lack the writing chops to pull it off. Double Decker did this so much better, that was proudly wearing its “I’m stupid and I love it” shirt from episode one, had like 5 minutes’ worth of drama, and even there it went either “actually, in retrospect that was all very silly” or “sure, it was sad, but the characters were still silly, just not all the time.” Anyway, it really doesn’t help that the new characters in T&B 2 are just really uninteresting and it’s difficult to get invested in them. They should have axed the new characters at planning stage, and just kept Ryan…
Re: DDD, yeeah. I really hope they’re going to make a second season, but realistically I’m not seeing it happening. I really do urge everyone to read the manga, because it’s really, really good, and addresses pretty much every issue I’ve seen people having with the ending of the anime.
I didn’t get to watch Double Decker, but the rest of the crew always says it’s great. I should probably check that out.
Check it out, it’s fun! It seems to have a bad rep for some reason in the English speaking community, tbh probably just because it wasn’t Tiger & Bunny, wasn’t the T&B spinoff people expected, and wasn’t trying to be much like T&B either (it’s more of a straightforward buddy cop comedy, often directly riffing on a famous Japanese buddy cop series, Abunai Deka, the title is even a pun on that). But it’s one of my favorite shows in the past five years or so.
