OP/ED Op-eds: Sono Chi no Sadame [JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure]

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has a long history of never getting a proper anime, and thus never a proper OP sequence. The 90’s OVA by Studio APPP, while awesome in its own right, had a (boring) five minute intro that referenced the origins of the stone mask – hardly appropriate for a series as flamboyant and silly as JoJo. So, when there was news of a proper television anime on the horizon, I was actually really excited to see how the OP would turn out. Would it capture the true spirit of JoJo? Would it suck? Or would it possibly be exactly what I always wanted?

I was not disappointed.

Fitting the scores of burly men beating each other up on JoJo’s pages, its first OP is a manly anthem, singing of the feud between Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando. Rendered in CG to emulate the look of manga pages, the visuals are a colorful montage that covers all of the Phantom Blood arc’s main plot points from start to finish. The music itself is no slouch either, composed by Kohei Tanaka, famed for his manly mecha scores. “Sono Chi no Sadame” truly is an OP sequence fit to kick off JoJo‘s Bizarre Adventure, and the adventures of every Jojo yet to come.
