Summer 2012 Anime First Impressions: Kingdom

Manga Adaptation by Studio Pierrot

Two hot-blooded young orphans in Warring States Period China set out to become great war heroes. They quickly discover how difficult it will be to achieve their dream.

Jel’s Thoughts
I love me some history and an anime that takes a historical era somewhat seriously seems like a great idea, especially in light of the recent outbreak of moe gender swapped warlords. This show however, is a mess. The animation quality swings from passable to flat out bad, marred even further by a hilarious mix of traditional animation and CG. I could forgive the look of it, but then the dialogue is flat and flavorless and the directing often feels like a stiff in-game cut scene from an RPG.

Verdict? This Show Is History
I really wish a better studio had taken on this project because the bit of history they chose to portray could make for a pretty fascinating series. Instead its dragged down by it’s terrible production values. MOVE ALONG.

Lifesong’s Thoughts
History is cool, I love to see different intreptations of historic stuff in anime even when it gets a bit out of hand and turns King Arthur into a woman or reimagines hitler as pop idol. I just have fun with distortions of history in general I guess so I am always on the look out for the latest and greatest. So where did Kingdom land on my historic interpretations list?

Verdict? Already Ancient History
The first episode was a double feature so I feel confident in saying this, this show is probably the worst anime I’ve ever previewed. The odd combination of animation techniques come across as stiff and looks like something you would expect from a late 90’s RPG but that’s not even the worst of it. The directing in this show.. the sequences of events that goes down is just executed in such an awful way. The presentation is just awful I really don’t have much else to say about it beyond that. Don’t waste your time on this one, you won’t regret ignoring it completely.

Irothtin’s Thoughts
The Most Generic shonen anime that can’t decide whether it’s trying to be bad CG or just bad 2D animation. I guess the guy who was voicing the main character in Bleach really needed a new job voicing another boring shonen protagonist.

Verdict? Historically Bad
This is among the worst anime I’ve ever seen. Avoid at all costs – if you must get your shonen fix, surely you can find something better.

Marlin’s Thoughts
The cg used in this is just insulting. Not just bad, insulting. Even if the writing was decent, which it’s not, it’s done such a disservice by the horrible clash that the cg has with the 2d backgrounds that it’s simply unforgivable.

Verdict? My Kingdom For Some Decent Animation
Just trust me. Do not watch under any circumstances.
