Summer 2012 Anime First Impressions: Humanity Has Declined

Novel Adaptation by AIC A.S.T.A.
Simulcast on Crunchyroll

Humans are on the verge of extinction. Their only hope may rest with a young girl who acts as the liaison with the mysterious fairies, who seem to be thriving while mankind declines.

Jel’s Thoughts
WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! The premise of this show sounded weird as it was, but I was not prepared for this. The gorgeous soft art style, pastel colors and cute little fairy elf things are incredibly misleading as the episode quickly becomes a scathing commentary on everything wrong with society. The message gets a little heavy handed at times, but for the most part it’s brilliant.

Verdict? Deliciously Subversive
I’m a little concerned if this series will be able to keep up its message without beating it over our heads, not to mention it’s going to be hard to top the shock value of the first episode. But they’re off to a great start and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Lifesong’s Thoughts
Cute, demented and moe. What more could you want from an anime? Honestly the first episode wasn’t even all that funny but, the blend of cute surreal satire worked a certain magic on me anyway that can really only be expressed by viewing this for yourself. Also, I absolutely love the OP.

Verdict? Potato-Dono Would Be Proud
This show could easily become my favorite thing of the season if not the year if this first episode is any indication of what we can expect from the rest of the anime. This is one you really need to experience this season, even if you won’t make it past episode one.

Dragonzigg’s Thoughts
This was a pleasant surprise, a show which appears on its surface to be a super cookie-cutter cute fantasy show that is instead something of a dark, ironic fable. I was constantly kept off balance as the show exerted a weird atmosphere that veered between bland, funny, sinister and straight up bizarre. Though the message it seems to be trying for is delivered a little bluntly at times, it nevertheless suceeds in being hugely intriguing, as well as delivering my favourite, crazed psychadelia. One to watch for sure.

Verdict? Bleeding Edge
It’s too early to say whether it’s a clever show under a bland coating, or simply a bland show with a few subversive ideas, but it’s different and that’s good in my book.

Irothtin’s Thoughts
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou meets PURE EVIL with a coating of powdered sugar.

Verdict? ?????????????????????????
Watch the first episode to its end and then judge for yourself, because I can’t describe this show in words.

Marlin’s Thoughts
This is my favorite thing ever now. Idno why but the juxtaposition of normal mysterious human decline tropes with the fantastically crazy fairy people just hits all the right buttons. There’s so much to say but so little of it would not spoil you to the surprise of going into this show blind. Just trust me by the time you see seppanku with your own eyes, you will be sure whether this is the kind of humor for you.

Verdict? Increasing Expectations
After such a hilariously first episode I’m seeing good things coming out of this show. Great art, great writing, weird surrealist fairy people, what more do you want?

Timmy’s Thoughts
Um, what?

Verdict? My Brain Hurts
I think I need to go lie down.

Aqua’s Thoughts
Oh, hey, this is a bit like Aria, right? Nice world… Nice colours… Whoa, dancing opening! Best OP of the season! … Pretty boring though, and the citizens are just drop dead idiotic… Those fairies are cute. Hey, what’s with that factory? It’s like the dude is from another time? Now this is getting interesting… Oh, hello, bread robot. What is this, Soylent Green? That’s not how bread is made! … What are y-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

This will be delicious if it keeps up its stunt from this week. Nice variation between scene setting, melancholy and SHEER HORROR in a beautiful setting. More of this, please.
