Recap: Tsukiko’s mom is an adorable mom-tsundere, somehow has tuberculosis. Yoto and Tsukiko finally find out the mystery behind his and Tsukushi’s memories.

Final Impressions

I picked up Hentai Prince around the middle of its run from Lifesong. At the time, the show was really picking up and, despite my reservations with its fanservice, I was really enjoying it. The characters were incredibly likeable. The main character Yoto was true to his title without going too far into the creepy scale of things, and Tsukiko was absolutely great as a heroine, subtly telling her emotions with every motion despite her unmoving face.

Even the secondary characters were fantastic. Azuki’s tsundere antics were pretty adorable. She managed to buck the standard of most tsunderes waiting around for their love interest and actually had her pursue him once she came to terms with her feelings. While we know Tsukiko will be #1 in the end, it made for a great rivalry dynamic between the two. Tsukushi was also great, being the driver of most of the physical and non-sequitur comedy of the show. Her idiocy was the highlight of every week and always had me in stitches. They also spent no time getting you to care for Tsukiko’s mom. It’s definitely an interesting twist on the tsundere formula to have it be for affections of motherhood rather than romantic ones.

For as light-hearted as this ending was, it really carries seriously dark implications about Yoto’s future. I know this is a continued series, but basically he will never have any significant memories, because any time someone else needs them they will instantly be transferred. I was also incredibly frustrated at how, after a seemingly solid romantic ending, with both Yoto and Tsukiko being completely honest with their feelings, it would seem everything goes back to square one and both girls act as if their kisses never happened.

Unfortunately, as I quickly found, while this show was easy to like, it was hard to talk about. Most of the plot was relatively obvious, and any thought I could put in edgewise didn’t seem to have as much relevance as I felt I could in other shows. If the missing episodes are any indication, this didn’t get easier as time went on. While I’d love to hear news of a second season to expand on the plot, I don’t think I’ll be the one blogging it.
