OP/ED Op-Eds: Raspberry Heaven [Azumanga Daioh]

We’re going back to another old favourite this week as Marlin has already looked at Azumanga Daioh‘s famously eccentric OP. Me, I’ve always tended to prefer the ending, the marvelously relaxing ‘Raspberry Heaven’ by Oranges and Lemons

It’s almost the perfect match for the show – it’s very gentle, beautiful in a kind of unconventional way and innocently, almost childishly cute. But there’s also a slight undercurrent of weirdness to it as well that makes it even more endearing. The use of tinkly keyboards and organ, Masumi Itō and Yōko Ueno’s spacy vocals and the wonderfully weird accompanying animation (flying Mr Tadakichi never fails to get me) make it silly and odd on the same way the show is, but it’s no less great for it. And how can you hate an ending that finishes up with Chiyo-chichi waving at the camera?
