With a show as flamboyant and camp as Star Driver, you’d expect an opening of equally dazzling silliness, some sort of big, camp power ballad. Instead though, the show went in entirely opposite direction and is all the better for it.

‘Gravity 0’ is a scratchy, uptempo rock song, full of driving guitars and a great, nasally vocal performance from lead singer Futoshi. It’s paired with a great opening animation from Bones, dappled in rainbow colours but never slipping into the fabulousness the show became (in)famous for. Instead, great use of silhouettes and strong bold templates give it a vibrant, artistic feel and the parade of character cameos from the show is a neat little freeze-frame bonus. The side-scrolling perspective is a neat storytelling mechanic and there’s a wonderful sense of motion and movement, never more so than when Takuto launches himself off the steps as the chorus kicks in. A great opener that matches the energetic tone of the show perfectly.
