The original television series adaptation of Hellsing may be hotly contested, but pretty much every-one agrees that it has a kick-ass opening
You’d think that for a trashy, ultraviolent vampire story you’d get out your guitars, maybe lay down some black metal or something like that. Instead, the series went entirely the opposite way, pulling out ‘Logos Naki World’ (lit. ‘A World Without Logos’). An insanely catchy fusion of pop, jazz and swing, it manages to be funky and yet have an air of foreboding at the same time. That heavy thumping piano beat and funky bassline anchor a distant, ghostly vocal track and some iconic imagery reminds us what’s in store for us once the song ends. While the original show might have been largely superseded by the superior Hellsing Ultimate, this is one part that’s unforgettable.

On a slightly random note, I actually much preferred the original series to the ostensibly better Hellsing Ultimate. I never finished watching the latter, and it’s been years since I watched even the little that I did, but I remember thinking that it kept breaking up the atmosphere quite jarringly with its weirdly placed humour. Incomplete or not, the first series is superior to me at least in terms of its general vibe.
I can’t agree with you entirely, but I will say I think the TV series is underrated. For me though Ultimate delivers better, more stylish animation, more brutal violence (which I think *is* important in Hellsing) and, most importantly, a complete story.
I do definitely wish the original series had a complete story. Since I never finished watching Ultimate though, I can’t really comment on what the complete version was like.
It’s totally trashy but in that lovingly over the top way the series embodies. The actually ending is very weird though.
