“Z’s Longest Day (Part 1)”
Saturdays 2:28 pm EST on Funimation
Despite an impending Blood Breed attack, Zapp continues to live his very unhealthy lifestyle. In the midst of the latest battle, his old Master appears to dish out some tough love.
I just said last week I hope we get some kind of all out brawl with the Blood Breeds and sure enough that seems to be the direction we’re heading. Before we get to that though, I was rather amused to get what was probably the most comedy focused episode of BBB yet. Zapp’s philandering was presented in a really funny way as was his complete and utter verbal destruction he received from his teacher. Even small details got a chuckle out of me, like the fact that Zapp, despite being the biggest idiot on the squad, was the only one that could interpret his master’s incomprehensible language. Special props too for handling his moment of “glory” in a much classier way than the manga. I don’t think we’ve given enough credit to BBB’s sense of humor up to this point, and this episode really made it shine without feeling out of place in the context of the rest of the show.
I also thought it was cool to see the level of respect Stephen A. Starphase and the rest of Libra paid to Zapp’s master, even though he is very far from being human. Normally that wouldn’t be a big deal, but in contrast with how we saw other Beyondians mistreated a few episodes ago it says a lot about their character. The masses are still wary of or even outright hostile toward them, our heroes judge them by their actions and merits as they would any other human… except Zapp of course, but he disrespects everyone equally so that’s to be expected.
I’m getting a little less patient with the slow drip of info on Black and White and their undoubtedly tragic past. I’m fine with keeping us in the dark but I feel like they are kind of a waste of screen time if they aren’t going to give us anything new. I’d rather have those last few minutes of screen time continue to be used on Leo and White being adorable together. Fortunately as we approach the final stretch of episodes I’m sure that will all work itself out. My expectations for a war with the Blood Breeds and/or The Thirteen Kings are pretty high and with everything we’ve seen from BBB so far I’m feeling good about our chances for a great ending.
