  1. For what it’s worth, I think the reason why the Susanna von Benemünde story was included here (it’s actually a gaiden story, like the Klopfstock incident, which is why neither story was in DNT*) was to give a sort of parallel as to 1. the sort of shit Reinhard and Yang have to deal with in their respective countries, and 2. the sort of shit that shows that a country’s leading elite (so to speak) has completely lost sight of reality. On the Empire side we have a representative of the narcissistic aristocracy doing this whole over the top theatric wtf *thing* while on the FPA side we have the disgustingly self-serving and/or completely insane warmongering. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands are dying on the battlefield and these people don’t even bat an eyelash, if they are even aware of it.

*IIRC both supposed to be set in the same year that Reuenthal & Mittermeier ended up working for Reinhard. Also from what I remember the OVA omits that Susanna had in fact made attempts on Reinhard’s life before, I suppose this sort of streamlining fit the anime writers’ purposes better.

Also, regarding current relevance, I think it’s in the upcoming batch that you’ll meet the late Burt Reynolds’ LoGH version…

    • Yeah, I think one of the benefits of having such a longer series is being able to spend time on these sorts of bottle episodes that really drive home each side’s issues.
