First Look: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Premise

Satoru Mikami is a 37 year old salaryman (and of course, virgin nerd) who randomly gets stabbed in the street, only to be reincarnated as a traditional RPG slime monster. He might not be pretty, but he sure does have a lot of light novel gibberish super powers.

Jel’s verdict: Like Watching Paint Dry

I expected this show to be terrible, but I did not expect it to be this boring. If you want to watch a blue blob roll around in a cave for 20 minutes while a magic computer explains a myriad of passive RPG skills, you will love this episode. For every other sane human being, you will probably fall asleep before the dragon shows up and proceeds to… talk some more.

While you might look at this incredibly dull starting point as merciful since it omits the inevitable harem hijinks the show is destined for, the well animated, action packed OP playing at the end makes me wish they had at least made a spectacle out of this ridiculous concept. The only advice I can give is to watch this and play a drinking game where you take a shot every time they say “unique skill”. I will take full blame (credit?) for your hangover the next day.

About the only interesting thing going on is the fact that the lame protagonist is 37 years old. Is this going to be a new trend as hardcore otaku age? I mean, as a 37 year old nerd I’d be more interested in a fantasy world where healthcare is free, I didn’t have to figure out what’s for dinner every night, and I could make a living off of writing about anime. Is that too unrealistic?

Marlin’s verdict: Check Out My Let’s Play

This was so boring I can’t even fathom what possessed the director to pace it this way. First episodes are where you’re supposed to show off your chops and get people excited for an adventure or drama or etc., but this show doesn’t even give us the dignity of a fight sequence, instead giving us the most pedestrian walk through a nerd’s build your own RPG fantasy I’ve ever seen. It’s hard to even get a full write up on it because such little of importance happens. Since you’re already tuning out of this show by the time you hear him say “In the next world I’m gonna bang all the girls!”, it makes it even harder to stomach him literally just grinding things out in a cave. I can’t tell what this show is going for, is it a straightforward isekai show? Is it a comedy? Any comedic Isekai that doesn’t immediately make dirtbags of its protags like Ixion Saga or KonoSuba fundamentally misunderstands what makes isekai comedy work, so if this is just going to be a slightly subversive power fantasy it’s never going to get above anything better than bland.

    • I think the show will at least get more interesting once it really gets started. In episode 1 they didn’t introduce any of the characters you see in the promos and the only action was in the OP at the end. Whether or not it will be “good” though, that’s a different question.

  1. Rumor hath it that not long into the series he regains human form – thereby eliminating the one thing of interest in the series. Not sure I’ll last that long.

    • Yeah, I’ve seen that in the preview clips so I know this first episode wasn’t a very good indication of what the show actually is. Ultimately it looks like it will be more run of the mill light novel trash.
