OP/ED Op-Eds: Bakemonogatari [Ambivalent World]

“Renai Circulation” may get the most attention, but all the openings for Bakemonogatari are great in their own way. Just the fact that they are tailor made to each arc of the story already makes them stand out. Add in Meg Rock (who knows how to write a catchy anime song) composing tunes perfectly suited for each actress’ voice and Shinbo’s artistic flair and you’ve got yourself a set of fine OPs.

“Ambivalent World” probably isn’t the best of the group, but I’d argue it’s my personal favorite. As the theme for the “Suruga Monkey” arc, it stars one of my favorite characters from the show. It’s also performed by Miyuki Sawashiro, and it’s no secret we here at the Glorio Blog love Miyuki Sawashiro. Her smoky voice mixed with some heavy rock guitar adds an appropriate confidence that represents Kanbaru Suruga well.

Perched on her throne

While the song itself is fun and catchy, it’s the animation that really sets the tone for the story. Most OPs simply serve up out of context clips and still shots of the characters to get you excited for the show, but Shaft will have none of that nonsense! The not-so-subtle symbolism of Kanbaru leaping across a sea of lilies, only to be cut down by Senjougahara in the end, pretty much encapsulates the conflict at the heart of Kanbaru’s arc. It’s the kind of extra touch that makes the opening a part of the experience and not just a promotional tool… well it works that way too, but why can’t we have both?
