It’s time for another round of Anime Shorts as we take a look at episode 5 of Aiura, Sparrow’s Hotel and Muromi-san. This week we have random nods to Street Fighter, two-day-late Golden Week references, and immortal mermaids on skateboards.
Aiura
Recap: KanaKana plays dead in front of Iwasawa’s house as a joke and the other girls just roll with it.
Jel’s Thoughts: Pretty great bit this week, especially with KanaKana imagining herself as Sakura from Street Fighter. Yukon playing along with the joke was pretty cute as well. I like how they managed to throw us in the middle of a random, silly conversation and still use it to establish how the relationships between the three girls have developed so far. They really are getting nearly as much accomplished in 3 minutes as many other shows in the genre hope to get in 24.
Lifesong’s Thoughts: This week we explore a deep life question. If a friend was dead at your doorstep in the morning could you ignore them? Probably not, but it’s more fun to pretend otherwise.
Sparrow’s Hotel
Recap: Golden Week is a very busy time for the hotel, tiring out everyone but Satou who seems to have unlimited energy.
Jel’s Thoughts: I was disappointed with this week’s episode, which is pretty hard to do considering my rock bottom expectations from Sparrow’s Hotel. There was too much doing actual hotel work and not enough ridiculous usage of Satou’s powers. I’ll give them half a bonus point for doing a Golden Week episode right about when Golden Week actually happens, but that’s it.
Lifesong’s Thoughts: This episode managed to be even more lame than usual. The shock of Satou using her super powers for silly things is gone. She needs to up the ante somehow or even the annoying novelty this anime had going for it will be completely lost.
Muromi-san
Recap: Fuji-san is envious of Muromi’s sleek figure and beautiful tail since her large breasts make it hard for her to move around. She tries to convince Takurou to tell Muromi to stop coming up on land and ruining her tail.
Jel’s Thoughts: Muromi-san has yet to disappoint, as what could have been 12 minutes of boob envy jokes turned into another great episode. Sure those jokes were there, but it was all part of a much sweeter plot to get Takurou to think about his feelings for Muromi.
Takurou has made a great main character thus far. His thought process during Muromi’s question about breast size as well as figuring out Fuji-san’s true intentions show he’s not your average, oblivious anime protagonist. His decision to just book it out of there in both cases got some of the hardest laughs out of me yet. The glimpse into his feelings about Muromi was really sweet as well, making this arguably my favorite romance (if you want to call it that) of the season. Is Muromi-san the best comedy AND romance? I don’t know how that happened, but I’m enjoying it too much to be concerned.
Lifesong’s Thoughts: An episode full of boob jokes and somehow it was still funny? Takurou’s laid back personality and hilarious reactions make this anime what it is. I am also loving the way Murumo-san is slowly building up a romance or at least an understanding between Muromi and Takuro in between all the madness. It’s a nice touch that keeps me coming back week after week.
