Muromi-san Episode 13 & Final Impressions

I found this waaaay funnier than I should have

Recap: Takurou is worried about his future but Muromi manages to cheer him up. They meet up with the rest of their friends to celebrate the new year.

Jel’s Thoughts: When watching an anime based on an ongoing story, the best kind of ending is one that leaves you satisfied but also wanting more. The final episode of Muromi-san nailed that feeling. The sweet affirmation of Takurou and Muromi’s friendship was a great payoff, but the cast getting together and looking forward to a new year made me wish I had more adventures with them to look forward to. I really couldn’t have asked for a better final episode, with the exception of a season 2 announcement after the credits rolled.

Daaaawwwww

Final Impressions

Even though this was a down season for me, when I say Muromi-san was my favorite show of Spring I want to be clear that I mean it’s really good and not I’m not just saying that because the competition wasn’t that great. Even in its weakest episodes it managed to be funny, sweet, bizarre or all of those things at the same time.

Deadbeat mid evolutionary boyfriend was the best joke

While it does have its softer and sweeter moments, Muromi-san is a comedy first and foremost and it does its job rather well. The humor pulls off the near impossible feat of being weird, loud, and occasionally crass without feeling forced or unnatural. It also packs a rather unique and silly take on many creatures of legend like mermaids, yetis and kappas. How can you not be amused by seeing the Leviathan casually remembering how she destroyed a continent while heading to the convenience store or hearing how everyone hates the Kraken since he acts like a jerk at parties? That lighthearted spin on history and mythology goes a long way to making Muromi-san’s sense of humor feel original without being pretentious or alienating.

I have no idea what is going on anymore

While Muromi-san is really funny and entertaining, it’s the relationship between Takurou and Muromi that really gives the series its heart and soul. I mentioned early on how there’s a certain loneliness to Muromi herself, and there’s certainly the whole Immortal in love with a Mortal vibe going on when you look at how the two interact. But their relationship is never played too serious, nor is it every really romantic per se. Much like the humor, its just a really natural friendship between two lonely individuals that managed to find each other.

Who doesn't want to punch a dolphin

Until this season I always dutifully carried out my Anime Shorts coverage as a sort of warning to everyone that they were a waste of time. So it would be an understatement then to say I was shocked at how much I really enjoyed this series. At only 12 minutes or so per episode, you can knock the whole thing out in an afternoon as well. So should you find yourself wanting to watch something funny, sweet and just full of unfiltered fun, you should really give Muromi-san a look.

See you next time

Lifesong’s Thoughts: My own feelings on Muromi-san are essentially the same as Jel’s so I will keep this short. Muromi was easily my favorite show from this last season. I usually have something of a hard time with absurd comedies. I am enjoy them, but I also have a very low tolerance for them. I never felt like Muromi was pushing too hard to make me laugh and I loved it for that. It has some really sweet moments as well that add an element I can appreciate. I wish more comedies could make me laugh and fall in love with a cast of characters as casually as Muromi has.

  1. I agree, it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure in that it’s silliness tickles you instead of annoying. Even though I am missing a lot of the inside jokes due to not completely understanding the culture it’s still fun and it makes you want to learn more about Japanese culture and possibly learn the language as well. Would love to visit Japan someday.
