OP/ED Op-Eds: Catch You Catch Me [Cardcaptor Sakura]

I can’t believe it’s taken this long, but we’ve finally reached one of my favourite OPs of all time. The original Cardcaptor Sakura OP is an iconic classic, which is surprising consider that it’s, well, a very simple song.

Full of cheesy keyboards and honky synths, ‘Catch You Catch Me’ sounds painfully dated and simplistic, and oh so very 90’s (which it is of course). Compared to today’s big, boisterous pop openings, this is little more than a cute children’s ditty. And that’s precisely what makes it so great. It’s a wonderful reflection of the sweet, charming nature of the show itself, and perfectly encapsulates the mood of the story they’re trying to tell. Gumi’s lovely vocals combined with Madhouse’s adorable animation set the tone perfectly for each fun, frothy episode of good natured adventure. Nothing epic, nothing world-shaking, but always wonderful.

Oh and for those true masochists out there yes, there’s definitely something about that American opening.
