Recap: The crew’s exam goes awry when somebody summons a demon, causing injuries from Toji’s past to flare.
Iro’s Thoughts:
For a mostly Toji-centered episode, you’d think this would be more entertaining. Alas, instead of being the chilled-out troll we’ve come to enjoy watching over the past two months, Toji lapses into broody anime lancer syndrome. He spends the episode dramatically standing around on rooftops, losing control of the corruption inside him, and telling people to let go and move on without him. Hilariously, that last example has an especially passionate, scratchy delivery from the voice actor, but the animation just has the normal mouth flaps. The big tweeeest is that spiritual terrorism two years ago has turned him into a half-ogre. I can only hope he Hulks out and trashes everyone present.
A long and boooring interlude in the middle of the episode involves Ohtomo talking to… people, but it all basically boils down to “the bad guys are moving and we want your help.” We do learn that Ohtomo used to be part of the 12 Spiritual Generals, but that’s not a terribly interesting tidbit. It was already obvious last week that he’s stronger than he lets on. And speaking of the 12 Spiritual Generals, they all seems to be total dickweeds. I assume they’re something like the Seven Warlords from One Piece in that they only work for the government on paper because they’re just too strong to be bothered otherwise.
In short, Tokyo Ravens continues to be just bad enough for me to keep watching out of morbid curiosity, without being so bad that I kick it to the curb.
