OP/ED Op-Eds: Iolite [Eureka Seven AO]

How did such a bad show have such great music? We already declared that Eureka Seven AO had the best OP of 2012, but let’s not overlook this hidden gem, which as the second ED only showed up at the point most people had long since bailed on the series.

‘Iolite’ is a delightful little slice of bubblegum pop, simple but catchy, cute and charming. Joy’s delicate, childish vocals are a perfect match for the upbeat, carefree feel of the song. It’s light and simple without ever beoming simplistic or predictable and there’s a host of lovely musical touches, like the great little keyboard riff or the instrument drop-out at the end. There’s a great visual accompaniment too in Ao and company’s pink tinged pop-art beach trip, a great example of how you can still make an interesting ending animation with limited motion (and crowbar in a little cheeky fanservice too). Plus there’s Noah wearing sunglasses. What’s not to like?

  1. Good call – I hadn’t heard that song before precisely because I finally gave up on AO just before hitting the halfway mark. Such a shame, because the show really did have some great tracks.
