OP/ED Op-Eds: Calling [Heroman]

I continue to believe that Heroman is one of the great underrated shows of recent years. In its own way, this fun ending theme shows why.

Created by the masters of enjoyably goofy J-Rock FLOW (who also featured last week) there’s nothing fancy or flashy about ‘Calling’. It’s a straight-ahead power ballad number with an upbeat chorus and a plaintive intro. It’s catchy, enjoyable and irrepressible, and in that sense it’s a lot like the show it’s attached to – never a showstopper, but a fun, hands-in-the-air ride, which sometimes is exactly what you need. And there’s also the delightful comic-book style presentation, whose limited animation demonstrates how sometimes a budget saving weakness can actually be a stylistic strength. The shot of Joey and Lina in the corridor is a tremendously sweet moment. Plus, check out that appalling Engrish in the speech bubbles! Just great fun.

  1. I’m, right now, beginning with the first episode O:! I’m not really into mecha and all that, but I’ll give it a try (also, it seems to have romance, even if I couldn’t find anything that proves it; except for a chapter called first date, but that can have another meaning xD)
If I hadn’t seen this, I wouldn’t even have known this series, so I hope I can enjoy it!

    • I’ll be really interested to see what you think. It’s by no means a classic, but I really enjoyed the simple, pulpy narrative they get going.

      • I got more hooked than I thought I would xD I’m at chapter 9 already, and I believe I’ll finish it between tomorrow and the day after xDD
It’s pretty good, although there are some things that bother me (like the boss being beaten and then just standing up again ;A;), but they’re just little things. If this had more romance (I can’t help it, I’m a romance-maniac) it would be even more awesome :’D
