Rage of Bahamut: Genesis Episode 3

Recap

Amira and Favaro take a detour to earn some gold, while we check in with Kaisar and learn about his troubled past. Also, zombies.

Euri’s thoughts

Rage of Bahamut keeps up the quality from the previous two episodes with another stunning instalment, this time with plenty of elaboration on exactly what the overall situation is. We learn the reason for why Amira is being hunted, as well why she appears all Sephiroth-like with her only having a single demon wing. There’s also a good portion dedicated to one of the god-like characters and the evil fallen angel fella, and while we don’t entirely know what their motivations are, it certainly feels like they’re being set up for grander events later down the line.

But really, this episode was all Kaisar. While his initial introduction made him seem a bit goody goody, it didn’t seem like much more than a healthy rivalry with Favaro. His obsession with tracking Favaro down under the assumption he’s a demon also seemed to be a result of this rivalry, but now it seems like it isn’t quite that simple. This episode did a truly fantastic job of making you sympathetic towards him, given that his father was sentenced to death over a situation completely out of his control, and also that he was essentially treated like a criminal. It was heartbreaking, which is pretty darn good going considering how little we’ve really seen of Kaisar.

bahamut3-1

The meat of the episode comes in the form of Rita, an innocent-looking, troubled young girl who isn’t really any of those things. The interesting part isn’t so much Rita’s true identity and situation, but rather that she took Kaisar in and had no intention of revealing the truth. She never seemed to be hostile to him in particular, but only to those who actively looked to intrude, perhaps for fear of her parents coming to harm, or for the situation breaking down. I really want to know what would have happened had it not been Favaro that showed up first.

Sure, the ‘200 year old who looks like a young girl’ thing has been done to death, but at least we get some semblance of an explanation. We can tie a lot of the situation down to grief over losing her parents, however it happened, and the black bible that she was using to keep them around. There doesn’t seem to be a gross reason beyond that, so hey, I’m totally cool with it. Given that she has been clear about her being older than Kaisar, and that she now seems to be tagging along, I’m curious to see how the two characters will evolve from here. I can imagine there being some pretty interesting dialogue between the two.

My only gripe for the episode was actually showing Kaisar’s meal after that teasing. It was much more effective having to imagine what it was he’d ingested, so I felt the scene was let down just a little by outright showing you.

Jel’s thoughts

This episode had a much darker, serious tone than the free-wheelin’ sense of adventure we’ve experienced so far, but it still works really well paired with Kaisar’s tragic back story. The important thing is that the situation never feels too bleak or “grimdark” as all the kids are saying these days, particularly with the positive overall outcome.

I am finding Kaisar’s back story a lot more interesting than I expected. I was assuming he was just a knight that got cheated out of his money by Favaro and was forced to resort to bounty hunting to afford his way home. OK, I admit that’s a HUGE assumption but that’s where I figured we were headed. Daddy Issues aren’t exactly the most original motivation either, but considering the circumstances it makes him a much more sympathetic character. Now the question is how long is it going to be before these crazy kids team up? A knight, a thief, a super powered demon or whatever Amira is, and a zombie necromancer would make a pretty rad RPG party.

  1. ………I dunno guys. The quality of the animation is great, no question there. But the story, it isn’t sinking it’s teeth into me 3 eps in. I’m sticking with it with the hope something clicks in my mind. But for now I just feel something is off.

Could it be the interminable Joan of Arc? Possible.
