  1. I think the issue with Birdie Wing is that it’s really good at one thing, but after a while it thinks it should move beyond that, and it turns out that it’s not really good at the things it’s trying to do now. It’s kind of the same with Tiger & Bunny, T&B is really good at superhero “office comedy”, but decided it should have a dramatic storyline, and it kind of sucks at that. In the first season a lot of people found the second cour very disappointing, same way Aqua is disappointed in Birdie Wing now. I was on board with T&B S1, even the drama, because the characters’ charm (and the shipping) and the flashes of the original aspects carried it over the less good parts. But T&B S2 somehow totally failed to understand what made S1 tick, and… yeah. It sucked, IMO. (Double Decker did it much better, with its smaller cast, smaller scale, and more self-awareness. Like, yes, there’s drama but the main characters still mostly suck at being dramatic heroes, and they know it.)

On a different note, I’m still kind of sad that Jigokuraku seems not to have made it even for a preview. Not that I don’t understand, the manga is so good, amazing material for adaptation… and yet, the anime turned out to be one of the most lackluster, perfunctory, soulless adaptations I’ve seen. Still, though, I kind of hoped it would drum up some attention for the manga.

    • I’m willing to give Birdie Wing season 2 has dropped off a little but I’m not going to put it anywhere near the dumpster fire that was Tiger and Bunny season 2

      • Oh sure, I’m not saying it’s as terrible as T&B S2 – I think it’s more along the lines of “second cour of T&B S1” right now, where it’s still enjoyable, if a bit less so, if you’re still feeling the charm, but also mildly disappointing if you fell in love with the original premise.
        I’m just hoping there won’t be a next season…

  2. Not that all rural Japan is the same (depends on exactly how rural, the specific region, etc.) but based purely on my own experiences, that Skip and Loafer scene seemed fairly true-to-life to me, so definitely gave me a few warm nostalgia-fuzzies.
