Premise
Kai is a young boy and rank-and-file warrior fighting alongside his comrades to defend his village against tribes of massive beast-like monsters. However, one day, gravely injured in battle, he begins to regain memories from a past life of a world far different from his own, filled with advanced technology and more.
Artemis’ verdict: Show, Don’t Tell
If I had to pick a single pet peeve I have with anime as an entire medium, it’s that it has a major tendency to overexplain, pointing out the obvious with clumsy exposition masked with dialogue when the visuals alone already say exactly what needs to be said. Teogonia is unfortunately no exception, taking a perfectly decent (if somewhat unoriginal) premise and introducing the world and its characters via completely unnecessary explanations, which are intended to seem natural but come across as more of the same-old “as you know, Bob…”-style storytelling.
That’s a shame, as Teogonia is an otherwise perfectly serviceable show with a distinct look to it and enough promise that I might have stuck around if not for the painful scripting. As it is though, it’s just yet another light novel-based fantasy-adventure isekai(ish) anime that will likely fade into relative obscurity fairly quickly, at least among most Western audiences.
