  1. Only now realized I barely watched more than 5 anime all year…. With that said, my top 5 would be:

    5. GQuuuuuux: I actually thought the crisis on infinite Gundams was a good concept just poorly executed.

    4. Dandadan Season 2: I’m really surprised to see this completely off your list. I get it wasn’t as strong as season 1, but I loved the fun of the Kaiju battle finale.

    3. Takopi’s Original Sin: Still think it pulled its punch by letting Takopi sacrifice himself.

    2. CITY: It was essentially more Nichijou and I was never not going to like more Nichijou.

    1. Apocalypse Hotel: What a diamond in the rough! Those last two episodes were just so heartfelt and I love that it’s a show I could recommend to almost anyone!

Dishonorable mention: Kowloon Generic Romance- Remember that show? I barely did writing this. What a waste of good atmosphere.

    • Sorry I missed your comment somehow… I was thinking the same thing about Kowloon Generic Romance. I was trying really hard to convince myself it was good and I remember feeling kind of positive about it when it ended, but now that some time has passed I realize it was indeed a waste. Not just the atmosphere but I think there were some great themes, it just got lost in whatever sci-fi nonsense they were trying to pull off.

  2. Great list overall! it really has been a strong year for anime for sure.

Personally i do want to shout out a few series

    • Apothecary Diaries season 2: it felt a lot more cohesive than the first season while keeping all of the great bits, plus all the reveals and pay-offs felt very earned after over 30 episodes of setup.
    • Bang Dream: Ave Mujica: honestly this one was pretty messy but i think i still came out of it greatly enjoying it. Taking all the characters and relationships set up in MyGo, ramping up the drama to 11 and throwing in some pretty wild twists into the mix helped make this a crazy ride from start to finish. I had a lot of fun theorizing with friends about all the revelations and how things would go in the next episode, and while it was definitely too much to fit into one season, i think the resolutions we got were very cathartic. Definitely a very unique entry in the band anime genre, the kind where it feels like people will try to copy it in the next few years to varying degrees of success.
    • This Monster Wants To Eat Me: this one snuck up on me right at the end of the year, after hearing for months leading to it that the production would be a disaster i ended up pleasantly surprised by it. Not really a horror, but more of a drama about depression and trauma and having a suicidal friend. It did a pretty good job of filtering all of that through the lens of the yokai and their magic into a pretty interesting story. While the animation wasn’t incredible it was also not bad either, and the soundtrack was really effective at making all the moments land regardless.
    • My Dress-Up Darling season 2: as someone who mostly enjoyed s1 but had some fairly big problems with it, i was surprised at how much more i liked season 2. It was just some really well crafted low stakes comfort food. Leaving behind the more tropey aspects and having a surprising amount of focus on themes of gender expression and self acceptance really helped make this into a well rounded package.

AOTY definitely goes to Apocalypse Hotel, though. What a show.

    • I tried doing Bang Dream since I’m a sucker for Band anime and I couldn’t get into it, Rock is a Lady’s Modesty ended up being my Band anime this year.

      • oh yeah! I couldn’t quite gel with Rock Lady’s pacing or the random sexual cut-ins (especially the stuff about tina’s breasts), but i did mostly enjoy that final arc about them clowning on those influencers
