Summer 2012 First Impressions: Kokoro Connect

Novel Adaptation by Silverlink
Simulcast on Crunchyroll

Premise
A group of five friends start a club simply to meet a school requirement and for some reason they start swapping bodies.

Lifesong’s Thoughts
I know The whole kids swaping boddies thing has been around for awhile but this is my first real experience with it. The premise might seem silly but the execution works pretty well here. Miyuki Sawashiro and Aki Toyosaki manage to capture their respective characters personalites incredibly well. As per usually I am enamoured by Shin Onuma’s style, he and Yukiko Horiguchi make a great pair. Kokoro Connect also seems to have slightly higher than average Silver Link production values which I can appreciate. Sure this is only a first episode but it’s a good start.

Verdict? Switch Me Up!
While maybe not as flashy or as cleverly engaging as Dusk Maiden, this first episode was a lot of fun. I expect good things from Kokoro Connect.

Marlin’s Thoughts
At first the idea of a plot based around body switching just sounds like an opportunity for sleazy ero fodder right? Thankfully this show has decided to take the high road and I like the results. The characters act as I think anyone would feel if such a thing actually occurred: surprised, and scared. When switching genders they seem mindful of the fact of how wrong it would be to exploit that.

Verdict? Watch Again In A Heartbeat
With the second episode already watched I say I like how the group dynamic is developing. The reveal of some sinister alien force is somewhat cliché but honestly there’s no better way to explain random body switching. Welcome to Invasion of the Body Switchers, if it keeps up this momentum I think I’ll be along for the ride for the long haul.

Timmy’s Thoughts Other the that first Shana OAD I don’t think I have watched anything using bodyswapping before so this will be an interesting one. Other then that though it looks to be same formula of a bunch of highschoolers in a club doing club stuff.

Verdict? Intriguing Enough
I am already watching two “highschoolers doing club things” type of shows so the plate is already quite full. Wether I keep up with Kokoro Connect will depending on how it decides to play out this twist. At the very least I am commited for a short while at this point.
