OP/ED Op-Eds: For You [Wandering Son]

Wandering Son was a show about a lot of things. Most controversially of course, it was about crossdressing children, but it was also about friendship, loyalty and the special connection between two people. That’s what this week’s song, ‘For You’ by Rie Fu is all about, and what makes it a perfect match for the show.

Wandering Son was not to everyone’s taste – it was after all an incredibly slow, often melancholic rumination on growing up and learning how to be an adult, with added sexual confusion on top. Few could deny how noble the effort was though, or how beautiful the result could be. As the ending song, ‘For You’ capped every episode with a flourish. It’s a bare but achingly beautiful song, helped to no end by Fu’s  plaintive voice and a simple but effective arrangement. There’s a sudden, joyous kick in the middle as the song steps up into a fully fledged pop ballad, accompanied by a shower of cherry blossoms surrounding main character Nitori on screen, before the song slows back down for its ending.  It’s a song full of wistfulness and some sadness, but crucially it’s not a sad song, it’s a celebration instead, about finding someone to share your life and your dreams with. Just as Wandering Son was at heart a love story, so this is really a love song.

  1. Wandering Son is not about crossdressers. It’s not even a love story. It’s a story about two transsexual children living in a cissexist and transphobic environment while combatting internalized self hatred and learning the strength to overcome everything and be who they really are.
