Recap: After adopting a kitten and spending more time with Rindou, Ichiko can’t stop worrying about how her powers will end up hurting them. Later she falls into one of Momiji’s traps, forcing her to enlist the help of a toilet god. Yes, a toilet god.
Jel’s Thoughts: Between our visiting god of the week and the one little clip with Momiji uhhhh…. bleeding out, this episode was kind of gross. Yet they were still somehow able to get me to take a man literally wearing human excrement on his head seriously. I’m not sure at what point my brain just started shutting that fact out, but it didn’t prevent me from enjoying the continuing development of our main characters.
The show has been totally focused on Ichiko’s changes to this point, so it was kind of interesting to acknowledge the changes Momiji has also undergone. You could kind of always tell she had much kinder motives than she lets on, but I think this was the first time she was really called out for it. You can tell how far Ichiko has come as well when you compare how she reluctantly took in Momou early versus her enthusiastically taking care of a stray kitten. It’s a surprisingly subtle progress marker for such a loud, in your face comedy, the kind of thing that just makes Binbogami a satisfying watch.
One of the fun parts of this show has been the voice acting and hearing actresses like Kana Hanazawa and Haruka Tomatsu going way out of their normal comfort zones. I remember being really surprised that Hanazawa was cast as the lead, seeing as most of the early dialogue is shouted in Shonen style battle screams. As her character and the show overall has softened considerably, the choice makes perfect sense. Whether yelling out battle commands or trying to console a lost kitten, she’s handled the role really well.
Looking ahead Ichiko has her shiny new necklace that is supposed to solve her problem, but I am really skeptical that it does what Ibuki said it does. I’m guessing it’s going to be some kind of slow fortune drain cooked up by Momiji. The next episode is titled “What do you look for in a late night anime? The bath episode is finally here!”, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they skew that particular anime staple.
