GLORIO Spring 2013 Anime Guide

2013_spring

We’re about a little over a week away from the start of the Spring anime season and I’m sure all of our readers are dying to know what silly Japanese Cartoons the Glorio crew will be tackling this time around. So before you all go mad with anticipation, we present this handy guide to prepare you for our upcoming wave of First Impressions. What shows are you looking forward to? Anything you would like us to pick up for the season? To the trailers!

Date A Live

Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: March 30th
Studio: AIC Plus+
GLORIO Coverage: Irothtin

A girl who destroyed the world 30 years ago returns and the only way our hero can stop her is to DATE HER. Trailer seems to be full of uninspiring mecha musume and harem hijinks, so I will need to be convinced this is any good. Iro will be covering this one because I know he’ll hate it and I’m a horrible person.

Karneval

Manga Adaptation
Air Date: April 3rd
Studio: Manglobe
GLORIO Coverage: Marlin

It’s a circus full of pretty dudes, except the “circus” our heroes join is actually a powerful government defense organization. The anime is based on a josei manga, so maybe we’ll see some slightly more mature plot and characters than the trailer seems to indicate. Also, this is going to Marlin since he’s the closest thing we have to a woman.

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge

Manga Adaptation
Air Date: April 3rd
Studio: Studio Gokumi
GLORIO Coverage: Zigg

A guy who cuts hair must use his magic scissors to cut the magic hair of a magic loli to uhhh prevent her from being killed or something. That’s probably grossly inaccurate but that’s the best I can figure at this point. Kinda get Dantalian vibes from the trailer, which is neither terribly encouraging or discouraging. This one goes to Zigg to break up his steady diet of rubber suits and explosions.

My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected!

Yahari ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru
Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: April 4th
Studio: Brains Base
GLORIO Coverage: Marlin

Anti-social dude is forced to join a club with other problematic students who happen to be hot girls. As boring as that sounds, I will give it a chance since Brains Base has been full of surprises with their past couple of choices. Marlin will be covering this one on the off chance of some sweet romance.

Ginga Kikoutai: Majestic Prince

Manga Adaptation
Air Date: April 4th
Studio: Dogakobo
GLORIO Coverage: Zigg

Genetically engineered kids piloting robots in space. Another uninspired concept, but judging by the trailer it seems a little more light hearted than your usual hot blooded or deadly serious mecha shows. With the potential for just the right kind of stupidity that Zigg likes, we’ve got him on the job.

Hataraku Maou-sama!

Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: April 4th
Studio: White Fox
GLORIO Coverage: Jel

Our hero is some kind of Devil King who is beaten by a hero and sent to our world, apparently so he can work a fast food job. No clue where this one is going but the trailer looks better than I expected and I do like dumb comedies with heart. Throw in my weakness for redheads with swords and I’ll be taking this one.

Photo Kano

Dating Sim Adaptation
Air Date: April 4th
Studio: Madhouse
GLORIO Coverage: Lifesong

FUFU… HAHA

Devil Survivor 2: The Animation

Game Adaptation
Air Date: April 4th
Studio: Bridge
GLORIO Coverage: Aquagaze

This appears to be a direct adaptation of the DS game, which I’m sure was a great game but not so sure it will be a great anime. Seeing as he’s the only one of us who’s played it, Aqua will be taking this up.

RDG: Red Data Girl

Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: April 4th
Studio: P.A. Works
GLORIO Coverage: Marlin

A girl who lived a sheltered life at a Shrine begins attending school in Tokyo and apparently bad things start happening. Considering the studio and from what I’m seeing of the trailer I’m kinda hoping this turns out to be another errr Another… As Glorio’s biggest Another fan, RDG will be going to Marlin.

Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride

Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: April 5th
Studio: Arms
GLORIO Coverage: Timmy

The follow up to Samurai Girls, basically more boobs, swords, and ink spots. At least the art is still pretty great. If it involves busty babes and sharp weapons, you can be sure we have Timmy on the case.

The Flowers of Evil

Aku no Hana
Manga Adaptation
Air Date: April 5th
Studio: ZEXCS
GLORIO Coverage: Aquagaze

Artsy + Crazy Girls + Evil = Aqua will be taking this.

Oreimo Season 2

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai. (yes, the period denotes season 2)
My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute Season 2
Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: April 6th
Studio: A-1 Pictures
GLORIO Coverage: Jel

The mother of all Imouto-shows-that-are-most-definitely-not-about-incest-nope-no-way returns for another season. Everything looks about the same aside from the switch to A-1, so maybe we’ll see a bump in the animation quality. As the show I hate myself for not hating, I feel I have unfinished business with Oreimo, so I’ll be tackling it myself.

Zettai Bouei Leviathan

GREE Game Adaptation
Air Date: April 6th
Studio: Gonzo
GLORIO Coverage: Lifesong

Magical Dragon Girls and Fairies, including one named “Syrup” voiced by Kana Hanazawa. This has potential to be the worst show this season, but our brave and intrepid Lifesong will face it head on.

Attack On Titan

Shingeki no Kyojin
Manga Adaptation
Air Date: April 6th
Studio: Wit Studio, Production I.G.
GLORIO Coverage: Gee-Man

Under attack from, you guessed it, Titans, humans are forced to live and hide in large fortified cities to stay safe. Presumably our heroes are not going to stand for that. This has gotten a lot of buzz with Western anime fans, and I must say the action and animation looks fantastic in the trailer. As our expert on all things hot-blooded and intense, Gee will be tackling this one.

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san

Manga Adaptation
Air Date: April 6th
Studio: Tatsunoko
GLORIO Coverage: Jel

A lonely boy spends his days fishing and finds himself catching the same crazy, alcoholic mermaid every time. I suspect this will be a similar brand of insane cocaine-fueled humor we’ll be seeing in Nyaruko-san, but who knows, maybe it will be fun? I am very easily amused so I’ll be covering this one.

Gargantia On the Verdurous Planet

Suisei no Gargantia
Anime Original
Air Date: April 7th
Studio: Production I.G.
GLORIO Coverage: Irothtin

A young lieutenant and his mecha are stranded through time and space on a fleet of city/ships called Gargantia. This has received a ton of attention since it’s an anime original written by the notorious Gen Urobuchi, and so far the trailers look fantastic. As our #1 Urobuchi fan (and to make up for giving him Date A Live), Iro will be on board for this.

Arata: The Legend

Arata: Kangatari
Manga Adaptation
Air Date: April 8th
Studio: Satelight, JM Animation
GLORIO Coverage: Zigg

Alright I couldn’t make any sense out of this story so I’ll just link this for you. Something about magical cross dressing and time travel I guess? The trailer makes it look much more intense than it sounds. Looks to be pretty stock Shonen but Zigg will take one for the team here.

Valvrave the Liberator

Kakumeiki Valvrave
Anime Original
Air Date: April 11th
Studio: Sunrise
GLORIO Coverage: Gee-Man

Mankind lives mostly in space and a small neutral nation gets caught in a war between two super powers. There apparently have fancy robots. Despite appearing to be more the angsty pretty boy Gundam type of mecha show, Gee will be the one to pass final judgement.

A Certain Scientific Railgun S

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S
Manga Adaptation
Air Date: April 12th
Studio: J.C. Staff
GLORIO Coverage: Jel

Railgun continues with a second season, promising to deliver us Mikoto’s perspective on the Sister’s arc of A Certain Magical Index. Considering that was my favorite arc of the series, I’m actually looking forward to this. So as I cover both this and Oreimo, you can join me in my time machine to 2010.

The Perverted Prince and the Stony Cat

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko
Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: April 13th
Studio: J.C. Staff
GLORIO Coverage: Lifesong

Alright let me get this straight. Dude prays to a cat statue for the power to express his perverted thoughts whenever he wants, leading to him meeting a girl with the exact opposite problem? It’s possible this could end up in the Pet Girl of Sakurasou mold of sounding a lot worse than it actually is, but that remains to be seen. I wish Life the best of luck taking this one on.

  1. Is anyone going to cover Otona Joshi no Anime Time? The stories are written by authors and they are based on adulthood rather than another school plot.

    • I thought about it but wasn’t sure if anyone was subbing it. If they do I may put together a post for all of them together.

  2. Yessss!! So excited for the spring animes! Shingeki no Kyojin being animated by I.G is really promising, and the battle sequences look awesome! Gargantia’s graphics looks amazing! HD??

Also looking forward to Aku no Hana, even though the story is clearly messed up XD

There’s also the new installment of Battle Ship Yamato 2199, which looks incredible!!
It’s been awhile since their last anime!!
