Zigg’s Verdict: Half and Half
There’s definitely two entirely different vibes I’m getting here. Basically, I’m not a huge fan of anything which doesn’t happen in a mech. The character designs are flat, weird looking and pretty simplistic, the story appears a stew of cliches and none of the characters really pop out too much at me.
On the other hand, everything that’s related to action is great. I love the mecha design and the way they’re split down into separate classes, the fights are nicely shot and choreographed and the action is super slick and smooth moving. It’s nice to see a show that can integrate CGI well and use it as it was intended. I’m not sure if the excellent action is enough to keep me coming back, but it certainly lifted this episode from wallpaper to pretty entertaining.
Marlin’s Verdict: New Designs, Old Tropes.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before. The brash young recruit, his geeky looking best friend, the skeptic, the ditz, and the quiet one. There isn’t much new with the characters in this show, but they were able to perform their roles well enough that I didn’t have any problems. I am quite puzzled with the character, in the future, working in a military space academy, wearing glasses. Maybe genetic modification is unethical but they don’t at least have LASIK in the future? (Iro’s note: everything is on monitors right in your face anyway, what would it matter?) I did like that instead of everyone piloting the same mecha, they had specialized fighters for different jobs. I can already see the conflict just by their descriptions, the lead mech is incredibly similar to the assault mech, and you can tell the green haired dude will be gunning for point eventually. In a season of disappointments, Majestic Prince may not be perfect, but at least it’s good enough.
Jel’s Verdict: Simple Fun
I was kind of expecting this to be a mecha parody but it looks like Majestic Prince is a lot more straightforward than that. There was a certain simple, classic quality to this episode, whether it was the color coded heroes or the character designs that looked to be circa 2002. Bonus points for nice looking fight scenes that pull of the difficult feat of making decent looking CG mecha.
I do worry that I can’t think of a single thing in this episode that I haven’t seen before, but if you make something really well sometimes you can get away with that. Judging by how much fun this first episode was, Majestic Prince just might fit in that category.
