Recap: Humanity licks their wounds from the Battle of Ceres while Team Rabbits learns of the Wulgaru’s true nature.
Iro’s Thoughts:
For the second time this series, the Wulgaru retreat despite easily having enough firepower to wipe out humanity’s forces, presumably for reasons of plot necessity – we can’t have the heroes wiped out so quickly, after all. The rest of the episode takes a somber tone as everyone recovers from their losses, while Izuru is dragged before Captain Suzukaze and told that he can’t speak of what he saw to anyone. This typically leads to a bit of awkwardness and conflict with the rest of the team for the second half of the episode as Izuru sulks.
Thankfully, said awkwardness is shut down quickly, while in another show it might go on for several more episodes yet. Team Rabbits is brought in to learn about the Wulgaru, including the fact that their AHSMB units are based on Wulgaru technology. On the other hand, there are perhaps some hints of a love triangle (or as Marlin put it, a “love centipede”) plot brewing among Team Rabbits and the Wulgaru girl, but I suppose we’ll see how that turns out.
Honestly though, I find myself having trouble finding much to say about Majestic Prince. Most of the plot beats and conflicts are cliche and expected from a generic sci-fi mecha anime, and I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve seen this all before. But by the same token, MJP executes all of it so well. The mecha are “alive”, but there’s a tech reason for that. The characters are anime cliches with one-track minds, but that’s justified by their pasts.
It’s hard to fault the show for such things – in fact, I’ve been praising it most of the time. Every time MJP does something that makes me frown, it usually manages to fix it right up by the next episode, like this week’s “Izuru-has-to-keep-a-secret” plot. You don’t usually see shows that know how to pace themselves properly, so it’s kind of a breath of fresh air, and it keeps me looking forward to this show every week.
