Love Lab: Episode 5

Recap: The Student Council commences their master plan to help the anonymous asker via radio drama.

Iro’s Thoughts:
I remain baffled as to the quality of this show. Meaning it’s actually good, whether it be the drama, the characters, the humor, or the animation. It’s weird. Also, I’m taking over for Lifesong this week, since he’s busy preparing for Otakon.

The first segment with the girls taking over the mics in the broadcast room is played like a heist, and it works pretty well, with each of them playing some sort of silly role to make sure the plan goes off without a hitch. The sheer ridiculousness of it all works pretty well as a joke, but their efforts to help the anonymous student feel genuinely earnest despite the humor. Riko taking the fall for the rest of them works pretty well as a character moment as well, lending a bit of gravitas to the situation.

Of course in the back half we’re straight back to silly slapstick comedy. I laughed perhaps a bit too hard at the motivational headband around the hug pillow, and Maki’s sudden crossdressing was a high point (and looking back at that sentence I am convinced this anime is filled with subliminal messages that are affecting my brain somehow). At any rate, Love Lab continues to be the standout sleeper hit of the season.
