Kill la Kill: Episode 4

Recap: Ryuko and Mako struggle to get to school on time, or risk being expelled.

Gee’s Thoughts: This episode serves as a breather after the last three episodes of nonstop action. Well, as much of a breather episode as something like Kill la Kill can manage. Not to say Kill la Kill is a particularly dramatic or dark show, but sometimes wacky antics are what a show needs after a series of ridiculous over the top fights. I can’t help but love how all the characters completely buy into the absurdity of the universe without a second thought. The idea that a school holds a day in which the path to said school is filled with deadly traps and obstacles, specifically designed to expel those who fail to get to school on time is both utterly absurd and hilarious to behold. Mako’s conversation with Gamagoori is one of the highlights, of which there were many.

Between Little Witch Academia and Gurren Lagann, people might forget that in addition to exciting well animated antics, the Trigger crew are also the masters of stupid fun comedy. This episode was channeling the full force of Inferno Cop and Panty & Stocking. Unfortunately, it was also channeling Inferno Cop’s budget. We were all joking about how episode 2 was more Inferno Cop than LWA, but it’s even more painfully apparent here. Between the stills, spastic animation, and the general “QUALITY” of the episode, it’s clear Trigger decided a comedy episode didn’t need much budget. To be fair, they were totally on the mark with that. As anyone who has watched Inferno Cop can tell you, Trigger knows how to embrace their limitations and split your sides with laughter. A combination of some truly hilarious scenes along with a bunch of top notch visual gags made for a high-energy comedy episode that managed to retain its humor despite the lack of actual animation happening.

  1. I liked thinking this episode as a high budget Inferno Cop, not a low budget Kill la Kill. It made accepting the jokes way easier as I love Inferno Cop to pieces, anyway.
