Iro’s Thoughts

I imagine at this point you are either entirely on board with the silliness going on in Log Horizon, or think it’s wayyyy too nerdy. In case of the latter, why are you even still watching? Go spend your time elsewhere! I, at least, am firmly in the first camp.

In short, Shiroe manages to take advantage of his subclass as a Scribe to create a magical contract that bestows Rudy with the subclass of Adventurer, allowing him to operate under their rules. This includes respawning at the Cathedral, which handily saves his life and apparently lets him access the player menu and such. We all wondered what other subclasses could do since the very beginning, when Nyanta demonstrated how to cook in the world of Elder Tale. What could a scribe possibly do? Or “border patrol”? Housekeeper? Courtesan? This opens up a whole realm of possibilities for how Adventurers can change the world they’ve found themselves in. Alas, we only have four or five episodes left, so I expect that’s something more for the realm of future novels in the series.

It seems the show used up most of its battle budget last week, as we get precious few scenes of the reinforcements arriving to tear up the goblin army. Instead, we basically get one pan of the summer camp crew, and then we spend more time with Worst-Character-In-This-Show Crusty blowing up monsters and putting the mack on Lenessia. Disappointing. I’d much rather have focused on the characters we actually care about, and see what Naotsugu, Nyanta, and Marielle could do together as level 90 Adventurers. Surely a level 90 Cleric has some sort of awesome heal spells, right? And Swashbucklers are supposed to be especially good against large mobs of enemies. Alas.

With the big conflict over, I imagine the last few episodes of Log Horizon are going to be a simple denouement, probably a series of slice-of-life episodes rather than grand plans or dramatic offensives against monsters. There’s been a lack of focus on Shiroe and his friends lately, and I hope we get a bit more of that in the coming weeks.
