All Your Monies: April 27th 2015

Hello, and welcome to All Your Monies, where The Glorio Blog’s resident toy and figure collecting crew (and Marlin) will run down the last week’s new pre-orders, turning a loving or scathing eye over what’s been put out for you to spend your hard earned cash on. This week Alter tries to steal the show when Plum, Phat, and Plateado show up to peddle their wares.

Aliasse (Valkyria Chronicles 2)
Alter, September, ¥19,800

Timmy: Man, you really know how to go overboard Alter. That hair and tassels going all over the place, that outfit and those boots with giant spikes, and the shield and giant ass whip that frames her. Everything about Aliasse is crazy, and I love it. And as expected of Alter the detailing on everything is amazing all the way down pillar of stones that is propping her up. I actually personally don’t mind the black boxy plaqued base either as makes this look a lot like an art piece, but it would be nice if it wasn’t mandatory like the position of the tassels is suggesting. Price is also a huge deal breaker, but considering what is on display I actually think she might be worth it, besides, you all need to buy her anyways so they make me an Alicia.

Jel: This has to be in the top 10 most ridiculous figures of all time. It’s been awhile since I’ve played VC2 but I don’t remember the giant Valkyrie lances turning into metal worms. That’s hardly even the worst of it as that crazy rock base is standing on top of… another weird base. Seriously, the black monolith and plaque makes this look like an exhibit in a very peculiar video game museum. I applaud the creative interpretation but this is so odd that I honestly can’t tell if I like it or not.

Makoto Kikuchi (IdolM@ster)
Phat Company, September, ¥8,400

Timmy: Phat’s IdolM@ster line has been really nice so far so it should be of little surprise that Makoto would look good, but this is definitely a whole nother level. There is so much motion at play, from her hair going all over the place to the coat and doing a little floating of their own. The detail put into everything is pretty great as well, with lots and lots of wrinkles and creases represented in her outfit. Paint looks great too, and I love all the color snuck in here and there to add contrast. I have managed to resist this line so far, but Makoto is not going to make it easy, especially considering how reasonably priced she is.

Jel: There are only a few facts I know about IdolM@ster and one of them is Makoto is the Best. I’ve been impressed with the technical quality of each of these Phat Company releases and this is just another quality addition. I particularly like the dark steel color palette with the orange highlights, but I must admit the pose is a little odd as she is supposed to be laying down in the art the figure is based on. Still, nice work overall.

Doronjo (Yatterman Night)
Plum, July, ¥12,500

Timmy: Doronjo is pretty interesting, though she seems to lack a little polish in the shading department. Her hair looks pretty monotone and a lot needs to make that look more like a skull and not a hunk of skull shaped plastic. Still I really like her face and expression though, and that pose does a good job of keeping that skin tight outfit in check. She feels a little pricey for what is on display, though there is the slightly larger 1/7th scale to consider.

Jel: Yatterman Night mostly avoided the creep factor (mostly) associated with making the main character a 10 year old Doronjo cosplayer, but seeing Leopard in figure form is kind of crossing that line. Her pose is not particularly skeevy but the concept seems a lot more uncomfortable out of context. The sculpt is also middle of the road, but that RAD skull base kind of makes up for any technical flaws. This might be alright if she was flanked by Tonzra and Boyacky but it’s just kind of off putting on its own.

Sinon (Sword Art Online 2)
Plateado, August, ¥12,000

Timmy: We have seen a lot of Sinon figures lately, but the company behind this newest one is brand spanking new, and also a bit of a mouthful. With that in mind we have no idea what the final product will be like, but I actually think the prototype they have on display is pretty nice., They did a good job on the colors, and the creases and details of her outfit and weapon seem well represented. I do wish she was wearing a little happier expression on her face, thought her face in general is far from terrible. I would say 12k is a bit much to ask right out of the gate with an unproven company and an over saturated character but I only buy the things and don’t make them so what do I know. I am really curious to know just how deep GSC’s involvement with them goes.

Jel: An average figure of a character we’ve seen a million times. I am particularly unimpressed with her face, which looks out of proportion and kind of dead. The gun looks nice but you could probably say that about any other Sinon figure. Actually, there’s not much about this that you couldn’t say about any other Sinon figure. PASS.

Nobody (XBlaze Lost: Memories)
FREEing, October, ¥10,000

Timmy: I haven’t a clue who Nobody here is, though I do know Xblaze is tangentially related to the BlazeBlue franchise. Still, someone sporting black hair tips and a boob curtains has to be pretty cool, right? Her hair is probably my favorite part, and I really like the way it flows and intertwines as well as the aforementioned black tips the ends. Her face and the way the hair frames it looks nice as well, and I like that they threw in an extra opened eyes faceplate for good measure. The rest is your standard praise usually reserved for swimsuit figures with her nice body sculpt and such applies, though she is sporting some nicely realized shoes as well. I still don’t know how the hell she would keep her top in check, but I suppose anime and video game outfit logic is in full force with this one. Price really isn’t too bad though if you want to get her and try to figure it out for yourself.

Jel: NOPE. I hate this character design. The sheer ribbon thing and just her general body proportions are pretty gross, and the black hair tips just scream “we ran out of ideas to make her unique”. Even as a technical exercise the sculpt is not very impressive and it looks kind of tiny scale wise. No more of this please.
