The Roundup: Summer 2015 Volume 8 – Early Edition

In this week’s installment…

The Early Edition gears up for the final stretch of the season with School Live and Prison School delivering late season twists. Miss Monochrome remains great but sadly, Classroom Crisis is bad again.

Favorite show missing? Stay tuned for the Late Edition of the Roundup every Friday, with coverage of:
Durarara!! X2 Second Arc, Working!!! (Season 3), Gatchaman Crowds Insight, Gangsta, Snow White with the Red Hair, Non Non Biyori Repeat, My Love Story!

School Live!
Episode 8: “Future”

Thursdays 10:00 am EST on Crunchyroll

Jel: THE PLOT THICKENS. I was actually OK with never getting an explanation on how the Zombie apocalypse began as it wasn’t really important to the central theme of enjoying the life you have no matter what. That said, wow this twist makes things much more interesting. Was their beloved Megu-nee part of some horrifying terrorist group? Talk about twisting the knife. It was particularly jarring after the first half had some of the most relaxed slice of life bits we’ve seen yet. I guess the big question will be if uncovering the truth will lead to some kind of solution to the problem. Obviously they can’t undo all the shovels Kurumi has put in people’s necks, but will they actually have a reason to escape the school? This just might be the sense of purpose School Live needed to keep it fresh for the final few episodes.

Miss Monochrome Season 2 – It’s better without context

Miss Monochrome – The Animation 2
Episode 9: “Publicity”

Fridays 11:30 am EST on Crunchyroll

Jel: We’re back to the business of becoming an idol after last week’s detour, but fortunately this episode was also pretty weird. One of the funniest things about the show is how Monochrome and Ru-chan have nearly unlimited powers and choose to use them in such trivial ways. I almost did a spit take when Monochrome used her powers to make a 3D printer instead of, you know, making whatever it is she wanted to make. It was nice to see Kikuko make an appearance as well, as you always need the “villain” to pop in from time to time to remind you what’s up. While not as disturbingly weird as last week, this was still a pretty solid episode overall.

Prison School
Episode 8: “The Diary of Andre”

Fridays 1:05 pm EST on Funimation

Marlin: Prison school pulls out all the stops this week, concluding DTO way earlier than I had anticipated. I was hoping for a bit more development from Andre this episode, but it seems pretty clear that his masochism was just a means to an end in the plan. I did love that somehow depriving him of punishment makes him lose twenty pounds. On that note, reaction faces were great all around, with the best no doubt going to Shingo as he creeps on Anzu. Unfortunately I was spoiled to Anzu’s real motives with Shingo, as otherwise I would have thought it a genuine twist to what was a sweet (Relatively, considering Shingo’s natural teenage perversion) romantic development. With Anzu’s last minute change of heart, I suppose it’s still possible that it can happen. I was totally expecting everything to turn out alright, so it’s an interesting twist having our heroes fail. It’ll make the mad scramble to clear their names exciting, and with the gang back together, I can only expect some ridiculous caper to follow.

Classroom Crisis – This was the most exciting screencap in the episode

Classroom Crisis
Episode 9: “Joyless Victory”

Fridays 3:30 pm EST on Crunchyroll

Jel: Guhhh… more politics and shouting this week aka the absolute worst aspects of Classroom Crisis. I did not really know or care what was happening with the candidates other than Nagisa was trying to screw over his half brother, which would be fine if we didn’t spend most of the episode on it. It doesn’t help that his brother had some of the worst, hammiest voice acting I’ve ever heard in an anime. That can be fun in some cases but here it’s completely insufferable. About the only thing of substance is Kaito’s attempt at a heart to heart with Nagisa, but even that turns into an overacted shouting match. I guess the stretch of decent episodes we got was a fluke as Classroom Crisis is back to being disappointing.

  1. The facial expressoins in Prison School are really something special. Shingo was tops for this episode but Andre…his face goes through the gamut too!
