The Roundup: Spring 2016 Volume 4

In this week’s installment…

Artemis is out this week so I’m doing my best to hold down The Roundup on my own. So sit back, relax, and enjoy our weekly wave of feel good comedies, with a side of me ranting about Twin Star Exorcists for possibly the last time.

The Roundup is a weekly guide to all the “other” shows we’re watching this season. Check out our full coverage of:
Macross Delta | Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable | My Hero Academia | Kiznaiver | Twin Star Exorcists

Episode 5: “Touring!!”

Mondays 12:00 pm EST on Crunchyroll

Jel: Come on Bakuon, put your clothes back on, you don’t need to do this. The show has always had some splashes of fan service but it was just kind of there, take it or leave it. This week though I’d say Rapist Teacher and Bikini Bike Wash went too far. I probably could have lived with the bike wash part as these girls might be dumb enough to think that’s something you do, it was the teacher thing that was just flat out gross. Yes, I know her feeling up students is supposed to be a joke, but that should never be a joke. It’s a shame since othwerise I was enjoying the episode. I thought it was cool they continued the trip to Hokkaido instead of just heading back to school and the chemistry between the girls is a lot of fun. Hopefully this is just a bump in the road (lame pun intended) and we’ll be back to the weird and funny show we know and love next week.

Bakuon!! – NO, STOP IT

Twin Star Exorcists
Episode 5: “Twelve Guardians, Vermilion Bird – The Guardian Shimon”

Wednesdays 7:00 am EST on Crunchyroll

Jel: I understand the concept of anime only filler: you have more episodes than content from the source, you need to fill time, fine. I’m even cool with changing things a bit to better fit the format of a TV series. But I don’t get what is happening with Twin Star Exorcists. Two out of the 5 episodes have been anime originals with what looks like one more on the way next week. Why even bother making the adaptation at that point? If you wanted to make something cool and angsty, just make a new show.

Case in point, our new character (who doesn’t show up till way later in the manga) this week is hilarious for all the wrong reasons. His giant sword and black “0” t-shirt made me think of the joke in Love, Chunibyou, and Other Delusions where everyone essentially wears the same t-shirt and talks about how zero is the coolest number. The difference is that was a joke, this is not, or at least not intentionally. I like the manga but as I’ve detailed in previous posts the anime is successfully killing the things I enjoyed about it. I don’t think I want to keep watching.

Space Patrol Luluco SEASON 2
Episode 6: “That One Part Awakens”

Fridays 10:20 am EST on Crunchyroll

Jel: Pretty familiar Gurren Lagann vibe this week as Dad does his best Lorgenom impersonation and the crew find themselves in a space encounter that defies all the laws of physics. Not too much else to say about the exciting SEASON 2 FINALE as it is mostly a visual spectacle, so probably best to just watch. I will note “Space Pirate Empress Godspeed” is a pretty great name, it sounds like some obscure cult favorite anime from the 80s. Can’t wait for SEASON 3!

Tanaka-kun – If you did not smile here then you are a monster and you are dead inside

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless
Episode 5: “Tanaka-kun’s Day”

Saturdays 10:00 am EST on Crunchyroll

Jel: With the cast now settled in I think Tanaka-kun has quietly become my favorite show this season. Shiraishi hijacking the show the past 2 weeks has been an adorable and relatable experience for anyone that has gone through having a dumb high school crush, which I’m assuming is just about everyone. I appreciate that she immediately realized her feelings and the first thing she does is ask her friends for advice. Anime characters behaving like real people? What is this madness? Combined with the fact that everyone is just so nice as Artemis has noted every week, you can’t help but feel good and smile while watching this show.

Three Leaves, Three Colors
Episode 5: “Your Birthmarks Have Faded”

Sundays 12:00 pm EST on Funimation

Jel: I love the playful mean streak this show seems to have, mostly embodied by Hayama’s personality but everyone is happy to get in on the act. Probably the best example this week was naming the gelée, in which everyone plays along with the terrible name knowing it will drive Sonobe crazy. Not to be outdone, it was also amusing to see Sonobe immediately figure out how to manipulate Nishimyama into working for her. Little jokes like that are keeping my attention despite the fact that this was a dumb “let’s work at the maid cafe!” episode. Well, that and the fact that they seem to spend their entire animation budget on one shot of eating dessert and one shot of Nishiyama’s cat per episode. Clearly they have their priorities in order.

  1. Ya ep5 of Bakuon went in the opposite direction for 10 mins. Hopefully it’s an anomaly.

    Twin Star Exorcists – Dropped.
