Re: SK8, the show has barely anything to do with actual Japanese skater culture either, really. It’s “skater culture as imagined by a bunch of adults who barely know anything about skateboarding and the subculture, but did some google search”.
Yeah that seems about par for the course for any anime about ‘youth’ culture. It’s still pretty entertaining though!
For me it makes it pretty cringy – especially because the “hip and cool youth” design elements (visually, but also just generally) are the exact same ones that have been used for “hip & cool kids” in anime and manga since the ’80s. It just oozes “How do you do, fellow kids?”
