  1. just to let you know, the scene transition from tenma talking to ochanomizu about how he built the perfect robot to tenma and atom wasn’t changed at all from the original manga.

speaking of which, i’m a little surprised iro picked the scene with tenma and atom as *the* scene of the show. if i had to choose, i personally would’ve picked the exchange tenma has with ochanomizu about atom being a failure, the culmination of which has tenma proclaim that a robot with a perfect enough ai to make mistakes will eventually lead to the greatest robot on earth. the name drop of the original astro boy arc goes unbelievably hard.

there’s this one postscript at the end of pluto volume 4 by manga critic tomohiko murakami that provides an intriguing perspective on this scene in particular. in it, the author draws parallels between tenma’s view of atom and tezuka’s own view of astro boy as a whole that i found to be really interesting. for long time fans of astro boy, it’s no secret that tezuka had a very complicated, sometimes contradictory, perspective on one of his most popular works. during the tail end of astro boy’s run, he’s been cited as saying that while atom looked the same, it wasn’t his son anymore. this was due to a raft of reasons, but i think in his mind, astro boy had become a real monster when he couldn’t, or wasn’t allowed to, move on from a brand that was straying away from his ideals. it’s awfully reminiscent to when atom’s personality started to stray from the boy he was based on, bothering tenma to the extent that he sells him to the circus. i guess in some strange way, tezuka is his own dr. tenma.

on the subject of tenma: i adore how he’s written in this series. aside from the 2003 astro boy anime, pluto is hands down my favorite portrayal of him. i think tenma is at his best when he’s seen as this sort of antagonistic force due to his own obsession and the show really nails it when it needs to.

also rip hercules. you weren’t my favorite, but you were badass and i liked your interactions with epsilon.

    • Thanks for the extra context, I don’t really know much about Astro Boy beyond the basics so I’m mostly looking at Pluto on face value.

I really liked the flashback with Tenma and Atom because it was a great “show, don’t tell” moment where the audience comes to their own conclusion. It’s important for Tenma to explain himself, but seeing the supporting, practical evidence is really effective.
