It feels like all the shows that were good last week were bad this week and vice versa, save for Planet With which is always pretty great. Fortunately, Asobi Asobase joins the Roundup to make its claim for best “girls behaving badly” show of the season. Sorry, Chio’s School Road, I think they have you beat at this point.
It’s been a good week for anime as nearly all our Roundup shows deliver solid episodes. I didn’t write about it but I also caught up with Asobi Asobase, which has turned out to be much better than it looked in the first two episodes. Would anyone like to see us cover that?
The GLORIO Blog sells out! We’re dropping Steins;Gate 0 from the Roundup and replacing it with one of the most popular anime currently airing… BUT WHICH SHOW IS IT???
Jel, Iro, Gee, and Aqua reminisce about the origins of GLORIO and remember the good and bad times we’ve been through over the past 6 years.
It took awhile for all the new shows to air, but now that we’ve hit at least episode 2 of just about everything it’s time for the Roundup to return! This season we’ve got Banana Fish, Chio’s School Road, Revue Starlight, Planet With, and Hanebado plus Steins;Gate 0 returning from last season.
While perhaps not as bad as we were originally expecting, the Summer 2018 anime season certainly has its ups and downs. Jel, Iro, Gee, and Zigg get off their up to the minute hot takes on all the new shows we’ve been watching.
Ton and her friend Shinyao move from China to London to study abroad but immediately get their luggage stolen. While chasing the thief, Ton enters a mysterious café run by a vampire, a werewolf, and some dude with a massive gatling gun.
We’re deep into our First Looks but there are still a few shows we need to preview before they air later this week. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like things are going to improve… Part 3 of our guide is headlined by… uh.. UHHHH… P.A. Works is doing an action show? That’s all I got. I hate to have to ask this, but is Summer 2018 the worst season of the GLORIO era (since 2012)? What do you think?
Kasumi is failing English so she turns to Olivia, an American classmate, for help. Somehow this leads to a series of escalating misunderstandings and challenges that end with the two girls and another classmate forming a club about traditional Japanese games.
Red Blood Cell #AE3803 is having a bad day. First she gets lost trying to make her oxygen delivery, then she gets attacked by bacteria. Fortunately, White Blood Cell #U-1146 and the rest of the immune system is working hard to keep everyone safe.
Haruka moves out to Okinawa to stay with her Grandmother and cousin. She hits the beach and finds herself interested in volleyball, but then DRAMA happens.
In the wake of a devastating nuclear war, Earth is ruled by an evil empire that has confiscated all modern weaponry. A group of resistance fighters bearing the noble spirits of historic rifles rises up to fight for freedom.
A young man washes up on the beach of a mysterious island city. He only remembers a few things: he travelled through time to get there, there’s a girl he must protect to save the world, and to do so there’s someone he must kill.
Jel, Iro, Gee, and Aqua go way overtime as we reluctantly say BYE BYE to the very solid Spring 2018 anime season.
Part 2 of our guide is a bit less grim if only because it contains less actively offensive content than Part 1. Cells at Work! looks like a fun, creative comedy and Planet With gives us an excuse to bring up cult favorite manga The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer. Other that? Meh. Please tell us we’re wrong and something here is worth looking forward to, and we’ll be back for Part 3 soon.
In our final Roundup of the season, we say goodbye to Real Girl (for now), Hinamatsuri (for now?), and Amanchu. Enjoy them while you can, next season is looking rough.
We tried to warn you on the podcast: the Summer 2018 anime season is looking a little rough. I don’t want to be too negative because we always finds shows that surprise us, but part 1 of our guide features forced sex changes, magic mind control slavery, big sister/little boy fetish stuff, and of course, lots of bouncing anime boobs… so yeah, we will have to look for some silver linings here. Let us know if there’s anything you think might actually be good, and we’ll see everyone for Part 2.
It’s business as usual for all the Roundup shows, despite the fact that there’s only one episode left for most of them. I will also have to start preparing for life without any new Hinamatsuri episodes to look forward to.
We try to talk about the new season but it’s bad, so we also talk about Osmosis Jones, Hyougemono, and, of course, six degrees of separation with Spider Riders.
