As Zigg brought to our attention last week, A Certain Magical Index has some fantastic opening songs. But it’s Index’s sister series that brings us one of the most popular, award winning OPs of all time.
More parallel story than sequel or prequel, A Certain Scientific Railgun was born when some smart person realized the shockingly tsundere Mikoto Misaka needed extra face time. When it came time to adapt the series into an anime, it needed an opening song that could make the connection with Index as well as fit its own unique style. J.C. Staff called upon trance pop duo fripSide, and that’s when the magic (or science?) happened.
The first five seconds of “Only My Railgun” pretty much make the entire song. The hard hitting beats and striking images of our heroines flashing in the dark simply demands your attention. The song starts with the huge explosive chorus and crashes down to the more wistful tone of the verse, setting just the right mood for this series but staying stylistically in sync with Index. In fact one particular scene even mirrors an exact scene from the Index OP, JUST LIKE THE SHOW ITSELF. Pretty cool, huh?
Since “Only My Railgun” came out nearly three years ago it’s gone on to become a huge hit, spawning countless covers, remixes, parodies and bad AMVs. If you need proof of how popular the song has become, check out the crowds at the performance below. Definitely one of the big ones!
