Recap: Not convinced that Kon and Ecarlate are actually dead, Gustav and KT tail Sainglain and Mariandale to be certain. Unsurprisingly, Gustav’s vices hinder his ability to do the job.
Jel’s Thoughts: First I apologize as last week I was pretty sure this was the last episode and it looks like we have one more. With that out of the way, this was an interesting episode as it had a much different tone from the rest of the series. Let’s say it was the most “Brains Base” as Gustav’s navigation of the city had a much more subdued and personal tone, jazzy piano soundtrack and all. They got about as much Urban Fantasy vibe out of it as they possibly could considering the setting and it worked well with trying to sell us on Kon and Ecarlate’s death.
While the change of pace did make for an interesting episode, I’m not sure how much I actually enjoyed it. The whole point of the episode is nothing was happening, as I assume Sainglain and Mariandale were laying low to throw them off the scent. And unlike balls jokes (which never get old), I was getting pretty tired of Gustav’s love of hostess clubs. For a second it looked like he was going to hook up with Mariandale, which would have been hilarious, so I’m kind of disappointed that didn’t pan out.
Even though there’s no way I’m buying Kon and the Princess are dead, I will say the ending of this episode was deliciously dark. It makes me wonder if they really are dead and will bring them back with some kind of wacky video game logic. That kind of Deus Ex Machina would make me roll my eyes with other shows, but for Ixion that seems like it would be appropriate.
