Recap: Having barely survived the last attack from their mirror-satellite beam, the Yamato crew begins its counterattack against the Gamilas.
Gee’s Thoughts:
Now we’re talking! The jets that sortied earlier have taken to the field, and we get some good ol’ dogfighting action. Not as much as I’d like, but I guess not everything can be Macross. Adding to the list of sneaky things the Gamilas do, turns out they were utilizing a camouflaged force field to hide their postion. Thankfully dumb luck comes to save the day and the jets manage to bring it down, allowing the Yamato to utterly lay waste to the Pluto base, ending the orbital bombardment of Earth.
I’d say one of the more interesting facets of this episode was actually the Gamilas perspective. The “true” Gamilas are revealed this episode to look distinctly different from their 2nd class counterparts, sporting blue skin and well…okay, so they don’t look that different, but hey, Star Trek got by on funny makeup, Yamato can too. Our villains, eager to earn the loyalty of their emperor, announce the Yamato’s destruction prematurely. Throw in a heroic, er, villainous sacrifice to ensure their commander’s survival, and now the Gamilas in the solar system are in an equally precarious situation. With just one ship and their entire fleet and base destroyed, it’ll be interesting to see how desperate they are to defeat the Yamato and reclaim their honor.
