Premise: Keima conveniently gets to skip over some content as we start a full-lengthed arc. Goddesses like the one in Tenri are actually in some of the girls Keima has conquered. Can he help them before the mysterious Vintage gets to them?
Oh, by the way, you’re gonna need to watch those OVA’s if you haven’t, otherwise you’re gonna understand whats going on even less.
Marlin’s Verdict: Incredibly Disappointing.
I came into this hoping for a season of at least building up some more of the girls who basically will become supporting characters, and maybe including one fan favorite before diving straight into the Goddesses arc. My problem with the Goddesses arc wasn’t just its pace, although that was bad. It just made everything so needlessly dramatic and complicated for a show that was before that lighthearted and fun. There were still jokes, yes, but this arc marked the death of this story being a comedy, and that really turned me off it. I powered through to get to the end, and even giving it that benefit of the doubt its conclusion just left me unsatisfied. I know it would be unreasonable to ask for all the heroines to be animated, but to have all the good parts from the girls between Ms. Nagase and the arc was like a punch to the face as a fan.
I also don’t like how unsubtly they’ve tackled the prospect of who the goddesses reside in. The only good mystery to that arc was figuring out who had a goddess within them, and anyone who watched this episode could at the very least figure out two of them just by the way they handled their backstories. As a loyal fan, I will give this show its second episode, but color me very disappointed.
Jel’s Verdict: Necessary Evil
I’m of the opinion that by the end of season 2 of TWGOK, something had to give. While the series managed to keep finding fun loopholes in their Girl of the Week format, I think I was ready to move on. So while I totally agree montaging around 70 chapters of the manga and info dumping the current situation was not the best solution, I think it will ultimately be for the best as far as the anime is concerned. I am disappointed I’m going to miss out on a lot of the fan favorite girls (and no, the guy with the Keima avatar has not read the manga), but there was just no way the anime could have kept pace. And while this episode was an incredibly inelegant solution, I am pretty pleased at its final destination. I’m all for ratcheting up the intensity a little and getting to revisit some of the original girls, especially Chihiro.
My only real concern is TWGOK is dangerously close to slipping from clever harem comedy homage into just straight up harem, if it hasn’t hit that point already. That was the whole point of the memory wipe mechanic, and with that gone I’m a little uncertain about where we’re headed. But after two seasons of essentially following the same formula, I’m actually looking forward to a little uncertainty.
Lifesong’s Verdict: Copout
I am disapointed to learn how easily Kanon and some of the other girls regained their memories of events with Keima. This whole goddess thing feels like a bad after thought. It’s a shame to see that this story couldn’t find resolution without reinventing itself. I am not entirely opposed to the idea of revisiting old heroines, but I don’t like the way it is being done. Just having their memories restored because the wizard did it cheapens the experience. I’m not upset enough to stop watching over this, but I am highly disappointed by the direction this is taking.
Iro’s Verdict: Questionable Divinity
Having read the manga, I’m some weird combination of more and less down on this than most people seem to be. A lot of people thought the Goddess Arc dragged too much, so I can appreciate the manga skipping right to the meat of the story; on the other hand, a lot of what was glossed over in the first five minutes of the episode is fan-favorite stuff that we were all looking forward to seeing animated. It’s a dangerous compromise to make, and cutting a lot of foreshadowing so mercilessly might hurt the flow of the anime. I see why it was done and agree with it to some degree, I’m just not sure it was the best decision.
