The World God Only Knows: Goddesses Episode 3

Recap: Keima’s plan to capture all five girls at once begins. Things don’t go exactly as planned.

It seems I’ve had a lot of my memory of the Goddesses arc colored by the ending, this was a fantastic episode. It had your patented Keima nuttiness, appearances by 4/5 of the girls that actually matter (Swimmer girl is #5, natch). Kana Hanazawa’s perfect awkward voice, even the obscure american culture reference that Wakakai loves to throw in there every once in a while. Most important of all? Keima on the warpath.

As you probably noticed above, one of the girls is out of that list. I can’t say this with absolute certainty, but for most guys i know Tsukiyo is the least loved of the goddess candidates. I’m glad we didn’t dwell on her part for too long, and we did get another crazy Keima anagram out of it, so it wasn’t a total wash. I swear, when this show does physical comedy, whether literal or in changing art styles, it’s absolute gold. Ayumi and Chihiro’s parts weren’t as funny as the other girls, but they did do well to establish how much Keima’s credibility had been hurt. It is funny to think back on the irony of it all. Keima is trying to convince the girls that he’s not a two-timer, when in reality he actually is trying to dupe them all. Without the context of Kanon’s fate, Keima becomes just the sleaziest guy ever.

I know I said Yui was my favorite, but I have a soft spot for Shiori, if only for these lines back from season one, which are probably the top 5 most adorable things ever. She gets the best scene of the episode when Keima starts going back and forth with her writing out an apology in her story. The part where she summons a Godzilla to kill of Keima was great, and only helped by the strange and simplistic art style used for it. Yui’s is definitely a close second. I forgot how perceptive she was in figuring out Keima’s two-timing. It makes it even funnier as she isn’t put off on this, only emboldening her to “cure him of his ways”, making him run away crying to Haqua.

I’ll admit, going into this season I was worried I’d have to drop it from a lack of interest, but consider me completely sold. TWGOK has always been a solid adaptation, and it seems like that’s going strong well into this arc. Nomatter my grievances with what happens, I know now that it will be infinitely more entertaining to watch it play out dynamically. I may not be a sub guy, but for me these voices are the ones that were in my head the entire time reading this story, and I can’t see it being anything but a pleasure to finally see it on screen for myself.

  1. The nosebleeds I would have had if cuteness and nosebleeds were a straight correlation of cause and effect from watching the Shiori part of the episode would have been enough to fill the bloodbank’s needs for a day.
