The Eccentric Family Episode 6

Recap: We learn a bit more about the circumstances surrounding Souichiro’s death at the hands of the Friday Fellows. Throughout the episode, Yasaburo constantly mentions how much Benten has changed since she joined the infamous club.

This whole Professor Akadama-Benten relationship just got waaaaaaaay creepier. It was already weird that a centuries old mythological creature was crushing on a young girl, but that was before we learn he literally picked her up out of the sky. Kidnapping is not cool show, not cool. I love how they just gloss over this fact like its not that important, like it was something else other than being kidnapped and taken away from her family that might have changed her eventually. If this change happened after she ate her good friend’s father, I suppose I can understand that. It would be nice for someone to actually seem to understand the gravity of consuming an intelligent life.

We also get another chat with Professor Crazy, which i suppose was good at least for the strangeness of it all. He definitely has an… interesting look on the world. Humans normally believe that our dominance on the top of the food chain is  good thing. Instead, he thinks it somewhat sad, because nothing but microorganisms will ever be nourished by his death. His death in and of itself wont have meaning, because it won’t satisfy other life the way the food we eat does. It’s certainly a unique way of looking at things, still doesn’t make him not totally nuts.

Through his chat with Souichiro we finally get to see a bit more of the man behind the idolization that the brothers have. First of all, the dude is way too chill about being eaten. If I was any self respecting father, I feel like I’d want to see all my children grow into adulthood before dying. Are they claiming the Fool’s Blood is a real thing, or that it’s just a phrase to explain the apparent capricious nature of tanuki? I suppose it could have just been a way for him to accept his fate without dwelling on it, but it just made a character who previously was nothing but praised and admired seem really silly.

What I liked most about this episode was the little scene in the well. Admittedly, I’ve never had the greatest relationship with my brothers, but there are still times where I found some solace in talking to them about my problems. Everyone needs someone to vent with, the blog chat can certainly attest to that. Still, I have this nagging feeling that the show just is not going fast enough, even if it’s still managing to develop its characters. I’m not sure what the message is yet. Is it really just like what Yasaburo says, about having an interesting daily life, or are we supposed to take more out of this family drama than the old adage of living life to its fullest?
