Hello, and welcome to All Your Monies, where The Glorio Blog’s resident toy and figure collecting crew (and Aquagaze) will run down the last week’s new pre-orders, turning a loving or scathing eye over what’s been put out for you to spend your hard earned cash on. This week, beware of NSFW content, and I’m not just talking about the fact there’s an Oreimo figure included.
figma Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
Max Factory, January, 3870JPY
Zigg: Magnificent. I’ve cooled on figmas as my collecting years have passed by but this one really is a fantastic example of how good they can be. It’s a super detailed sculpt, a great collection of acessories and a figure type that’s much more suited to the action packed style of Attack On Titan. As a side note, Max Factory is doing more and more of these premium priced figmas with tons of accessories recently, which makes me a little uneasy. Still, can’t deny the quality here.
Jel: Now this is more like it! I mentioned last week the nendoroid form of Mikasa doesn’t really do her justice and here’s your proof why. Figmas are just so much better for action-oriented characters. The level of detail on her outfit and gear looks great and overall I’ve always thought she has a very simple, cool design. I don’t really care much about Attack on Titan personally but for the scores of fans out there this is a must buy.
Timmy: Mikasa’s nendo last week was pretty cool, but this blows it out of the park. Tons and tons and tons of details. I can’t say I am the biggest Titan fan but I’ll definitely be giving Mikasa here some consideration.
S.H. Figuarts Sailor Mars (Sailor Moon)
Bandai, December, 3250JPY
Zigg: Pretty much the same deal here as with Sailor Moon a few months back – great reproduction of the design, but the simple look of the Sailor Senshi doesn’t really lend itself to a very impressive figure, and I remain wary of the S.H. Figuarts line’s ability to do anythign other than robots or rubber suits. Also, just a personal thing – I don’t like the all red and black hair looks as much as Usagi’s iconic blue/blonde.
Jel: Sailor Mars is one of the less visually interesting designs of the cast, but she is the RED one and therefore very popular and important. She does have the special hands to make the gun shape she shoots fireballs with, so that’s something. It would have been cooler to have an actual fireball though. As with all Figuarts, the joints are somewhat disappointing and generally make me wish this was a figma. That seems to be a running theme for me these days.
Nendoroid Shinku (Rozen Maiden)
Good Smile Company, December, 3870JPY
Zigg: It’s a pretty great reproduction in miniature of Shinku, but Nendoroids live and die on faces and expressions and all three of the faces here are pretty terrible, while the acessories are decent but nothing to write home about. The case is the exception, a fantastic add, but there’s no way this should be so highly priced and if that’s the cause then it’s unfortunate.
Jel: NOPE. Dolls coming to life is like my worst nightmare, so Rozen Maiden is definitely not for me. That being said, seeing Shinku in nendoroid form does make it easier to ignore that fact, and her case thing is one of the most unique nendo accessories we’ve seen. I’m also impressed with the detail work on her dress. You don’t usually see wrinkles and lace that well articulated on a nendo.
Timmy: Pretty nice and that case is a real great touch. A bit on the pricey side because of it though.
Sorceress (Dragon’s Crown)
Alphamax, March 2014, 10,280JPY
Zigg: Dammit, I already used the NO gif last week didn’t I? This is by the look of it a beautifully made, wonderfully painted figure, and I’m particularly taken by that awesome skeleton base. But dear god, that character design. Gross, demeaning and disgusting.
Jel: I love the art style of Dragon’s Crown but it is just not meant to exist in reality. Particularly with this figure where the only thing grossly exaggerated is her breasts, the Sorceress looks considerably more bizarre without any context. That skeleton base is pretty boss though.
Timmy: Everything but the breasts looks fantastic. Unfortunately they are far too distracting for me to consider putting Sorceress on my shelf despite loving George Kamitani’s artstyle.
Asuka Damage ver. (Senran Kagura)
Griffon, October, 7140JPY
Zigg: What sort of battle damage rips off the top layer of your clothing completely round your waste while leaving no other visible sign? Why is she not wearing a bra? Why do people keep buying figures made by Griffon?
Jel: I guess Griffon’s Touhou money must be drying up as it seems they’ve been releasing a lot more skeevy figures lately. If you’re going to a battle damaged figure, at least make it look like the character is fighting or something. Instead this looks like she just stood there as someone carefully cut her outfit off with a pair of scissors and was too stunned to do anything about it. I mean look at her face, it just says “Really? Did you really just do that?”. The price is pretty steep too, so nothing really positive here.
Timmy: I’ll admit to Asuka being my favorite Senran girl (barely mind you. They are all pretty great.) So I am always in the market for more figures of her. Griffon misses the mark though. While I do like the expression one her face, the pose itself is all sorts or boring and the ripped clothing is tacky at best. If it weren’t for the latter I probably would have considered getting Asuka but nope Griffon, try again.
Kirino Kousaka ‘True End’ ver. (Oreimo)
Max Factory, March 2014, 15,750JPY…wait what? (Dengekiya exclusive)
Jel: Surely there is something better Max Factory could use their considerable talents on besides a figure of a girl fake marrying her brother so they can closed mouth kiss. If you are watching Oreimo or are interested in watching it, that is what happens in the end and I hope I spoiled it for you and you never finish it. It really is a shame as on its own this a lovely figure and it will probably look AMAZING when it’s painted. The stairs in particular are a really nice addition. The price is outrageous even by Dengekiya exclusive standards, but you weren’t really considering buying this, were you?
Timmy: Bad endings aside, this will probably turn out amazing. Hell, at that price it had better damn well turn out amazing. If you want her better pony up though as I am sure the aftermarket will be even worse. Also you are crazy.
