With the fun and silly shows of Summer coming to an end, it’s time for SERIOUS BUSINESS and the big name titles of Fall. Hotly anticipated shows like Kill La Kill and Beyond the Boundary (Kyoukai no Kanata if you must) headline a season of full of super powered teenagers and a lot of potential hits. There’s so many in fact, we’ll be breaking up our season guide into two parts, so keep an eye out for part 2 later in the week. Which of our intrepid editors will be covering your favorite new series? Take a look, and make sure to let us know what you’re looking forward to.
[UPDATE: Part 2 is now live, you can read it right here.]
Super Seisyun Brothers
Manga Adaptation
Air Date: 9/13/2013
Studio: AIC Plus+
GLORIO Coverage: Marlin
I’m not even sure if this will be a full length series, but we’ll add it to our coverage for now. The story follows two pairs of siblings that become friends and are eerily similar to each other. Slice of Life comedy ensues. Not sure where this one is headed, but Marlin will be checking it out.
Diabolik Lovers
Visual Novel Adaptation
Air Date: 9/16/2013
Studio: Zexcs
GLORIO Coverage: Gee
This pretty much exists to fill this season’s otome game adaptation quota. It’s about six vampire brothers that no doubt want to sink their fangs into our female protagonist. So yeah, pretty sure you’re not going into this one for deep story lines and subtle, nuanced characters. Because I’m a terrible person and I think it will be HILARIOUS, I’ve assigned this to the hot blooded Gee-man for coverage. Should be fun!
Beyond the Boundary
Kyoukai no Kanata
Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: 10/2/2013
Studio: Kyoto Animation
GLORIO Coverage: Irothtin
Clamoring for Kyoto Animation to deliver a series with substance has become a seasonal event, but Beyond the Boundary looks like it might actually deliver. It’s an urban fantasy tale that appears to be set in a spirit world that looks a lot like modern day Japan. Our main characters are a dude with healing factor and a girl that wields blood magic, and apparently they fight monsters or something? Color me intrigued. As expected from KyoAni it looks stunning, although I must admit their trademark squishy character designs look kind of awkward in a fight. As arguably the Glorio Blog’s biggest KyoAni fan, we will spare you posts full of my fanboying out and hand over coverage to the unflappable Irothtin.
Kyousogiga
Anime Original
Air Date: 10/2/2013
Studio: Toei
GLORIO Coverage: Aquagaze
As something that sounds like a bizarre Japanese take on Alice in Wonderland, I’m kind of disappointed in myself for not checking out Kyousogiga in one of it’s previous iterations. Well now my (and your) chance to redeem myself (yourself) has arrived as we are getting a full TV series adaptation. The actual story is about three siblings who get trapped in a weird city and must find a rabbit to get them out, although I’m sure things get much more complicated than that. Our own Aquagaze loved it and it even made our best anime of 2012 list, so he will be covering this one out.
Coppelion
Manga Adaptation
Air Date: 10/2/2013
Studio: GoHands
GLORIO Coverage: Gee-Man
This has actually been in the works since 2010 but was put on hold after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. It’s easy to see why, as the story follows three girls that are genetically engineered to be immune to radioactivity after a fictional nuclear plant accident. They form a special unit of the Tokyo SDF to look for survivors. The premise has a post-apocalyptic kind of vibe, but the trailer seems to have a lot of military vehicles, guns and… lightning magic? Seems like this could be interesting, and our biggest military enthusiast Gee will be giving it a look.
The Calm From Tomorrow
Nagi no Asukara
Anime Original
Air Date: 10/3/2013
Studio: P.A. Works
GLORIO Coverage: Jel
Seems like we’re getting a lot of urban fantasy this season. At least that’s what I’m assuming this is, as it centers on a group of friends who live underwater but are forced to attend school on land. P.A. Works can be a little hit and miss with their original series, but at the very least you can be sure it will be pretty. Personally I’m expecting more slice of life stories than fantasy elements, which I like when it works, so I’ll be checking it out.
Outbreak Company
Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: 10/3/2013
Studio: feel.
GLORIO Coverage: Lifesong
There’s a lot of directions I could see Outbreak Company going. The idea of an Otaku NEET hired by the government to be a “moe evangelist” in a fantasy world could A. be full of shameless pandering to the demographic B. poke fun it’s viewers and be over-the-top HILARIOUS or C. look as surprisingly serious as it does in the trailer. I’d actually be interested if they go the “B” route, but as it is we’ll have Lifesong (Glorio’s own Top Otaku) covering this.
Infinite Stratos 2
Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: 10/3/2013
Studio: 8-bit
GLORIO Coverage: Jel
That generic harem anime with the cool mecha musume designs returns for a second season. The story follows a dude named Ichika who is the only male person in the world that can pilot special mech suits called (you guessed it) “Infinite Stratos”. Seeing as the suits have previously only been piloted by girls, he is forced to go to an all girls’ school to learn how to use them. I guess the “story” will be continuing in season 2? Let’s be honest, it’s an excuse for more harem antics and the occasional cool fight scene, and I’ll be shocked if it’s anymore than that. As the only Glorio member that survived season 1, I will carry out my duty for you, dear readers, and cover this.
Golden Time
Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: 10/3/2013
Studio: J.C. Staff
GLORIO Coverage: Marlin
I feel like we haven’t had a good romance in a couple of seasons, so it would be nice if Golden Time fit the bill. The story follows a new college student who loses all his memories up to his high school graduation, then runs into his beautiful childhood friend. With the promise of some drama, comedy, and supernatural elements, this could be pretty good. I also like that it happens post-high school, but historically that doesn’t always mean much. As our master of romance and college settings, Marlin will be picking this up.
Strike the Blood
Light Novel Adaptation
Air Date: 10/4/2013
Studio: Silver Link/Connect
GLORIO Coverage: Lifesong
Hey, more high school kids with super powers! This time our heroes are a boy that happens to be the most powerful vampire in the world and the girl assigned to keep an eye on him. She also has a really sweet spear. Had this been any other season I would be more interested this, but it seems like there’s going to be some tough competition with Beyond the Boundary and other like minded shows. We’ll get a clearer opinion on it as Lifesong will be giving it a look.
Log Horizon
Novel Adaptation
Air Date: 10/5/2013
Studio: Satelight
GLORIO Coverage: Lifesong
Fair or not, Log Horizon is pretty much going to run its course being bombarded with Sword Art Online comparisons. I’m sure that wasn’t an accident considering SAO’s popularity and the very similar “trapped in an MMO” plot line. The twist here is our characters are physically transported to a different fantasy world, and with the writer of Maoyu at the helm we could get an interesting spin on the setting. As both an MMO and SAO fan, Lifesong will be checking this one out.
Hajime no Ippo: Rising
Manga Adaptation
Air Date: 10/5/2013
Studio: Madhouse
GLORIO Coverage: Gee-Man
The classic boxing manga returns for another anime treatment. Unfortunately I’m going to claim ignorance beyond the fact that this will be a sequel to the previous anime series that aired in 2009. I suspect there will be a lot of HARD WORK and DETERMINATION in between the punching people in the face, so Gee will be taking this on. [As of writing, there is no trailer for the new season. Sorry!]
Little Busters! ~Refrain~
Visual Novel Adaptation
Air Date: 10/5/2013
Studio: J.C. Staff
GLORIO Coverage: Lifesong
The second season of the Little Busters! adaptation will cover the visual novel’s final scenario. Considering I haven’t played the game and didn’t make it past the third episode of the anime, I’m just going to assume there will be more magical parallel worlds and girls with tragic pasts. Despite taking issue with the first season, I am going to try and coax Lifesong into covering this for us.
