Recap: Tomoko returns to school and must suffer the horrors of sitting in the middle of the classroom. When the call goes out for new clubs, she gathers the courage to start her own.
Jel’s Thoughts: Aside from a really cool transition shot into the OP, this episode bored me to tears. I can appreciate when WataMote attempts to take a more subtle, low stakes approach to Tomoko’s psychosis, but by the time we got to the string of predictable anime references and fantasy sequences at the end I just wanted the whole thing to be over.
I suppose this week’s silver lining was seeing Tomoko try and pick herself up and start a club. Despite the aforementioned stupidity her attempt dissolved into, it was another moment where you felt she genuinely wanted to better herself. It would have been much more interesting had the club actually been approved and we could have seen Tomoko running around without a clue what to do next. At this point though anything aside from abject failure would have been a shock, and I don’t think WataMote has very much shock left in it.
As the show sputters to the finish you line, I am just ready for WataMote to be over. I would like to think they have one more really sweet, poignant moment left in them but my confidence that we’ll get anything we haven’t seen already is pretty weak.
